Time to overhaul my HP N36L/NAS box. It currently has 1TB Spinpoint F1s in there. They're quite old now, and I had a verification error thrown up in a backup last night.

What are people's opinions of 3 TB WD Greens?

Are they as quiet as they make out, presume this comes from being 5400RPM. I will start off with a pair ran in RAID 1. Is anyone aware of any issues with these drives and using the onboard controller on an N36L under Ubuntu (10.04.4 LTS).

Are there any other drives worth looking at?

Latest drives available that are specifically made for NAS boxes are the new Western Digital Reds, they have a longer MTF and are designed to be on 24/7, only *slightly* more expensive than regular drives as well :)

are you sure its a faulty drive, verification errors usually mean the file changed after backup... duff drivers usually throw up write / read errors from the OS

I'm not 100% sure that the drives are faulty, but I'm running low on space and the drives are old - not currently mirrored, it's time to replace them.

I'm replacing my greens with reds. From what I can see a good performance boost over the greens as well
