Driving game

It really depends on what genre of racing game you're after.

Arcade
NFS series (Underground, etc)
Toca Race Driver series (1, 2 or 3)
Juiced

Simulation
Live For Speed S2
GTR
GTL
Grand Prix Legends
rFactor

Obviously for the simulations a steering wheel is the preferred controller of choice, as that's what they're designed to be raced with.

Also, perhaps someone could fill in with more arcade racers - i'm not really up on what's out on the arcade market, but Need For Speed and Juiced spring to mind.

To add to the simulation list:

Richard Burns Rally - Such a hard game, but so rewarding once you get into it.

Another vote for LFS.
I spend most of my gaming time on it and it doesnt require a high performance PC. While my RMA's away I'm running it on a X300 :O

Its free unless you want all the other tracks and the multiplayer is the best :p

Well it's not exactly free, it's just a demo that's free. But I do think it's the best game out there personally, sim wise. Though you can't beat GTR for its sound.

Thats what I meant ;)
Great game though. Worth a download to see.

Do we have an OCUK LFS thread or page. I'd like to join in but I've always been hopeless at it. I used to have a wheel but not anymore.

Also, what about handling setups etc? Would you guys help with that etc? I'm gonna go get S2 tonight I think. I'm still on S1, thats how bad I am. For the time being I might use a PS2 controller if I can find one.

Have they made the game faster paced at all?

Not sure what you mean by faster paced but there is a load of retards still on there who just crash into people

There are some Uber good people on there.

I havent done many of the races lately, just go to the drift rooms :D, Im actually quite good... I think.

You do get a lot of muppets playing dodgems in the demo servers, but it is quite rare on the licensed ones.

What do you mean by faster paced?

Theres now 3 single seaters including an F1 car and 3 GTR type cars if its speed you're after.

Even in the slower cars the racing can be quite frantic, and they are a bit more forgiving in door bashing incidents :)

I had the problem of getting bored of S1 quick. I only enjoyed the FXR or whater it was, but I could never keep the car on the road.

Its a shame there aint any S1 servers running so I can get back into it before shelling out a little more cash if I'm not going to enjoy it.

I remember the odd dodgem idiots, esp now there's damage models.

Actually, are there any guides to setting the cars up and do I really have to earn points to play the bigger cars?! I lose them every time I reformat etc.

rFactor and LFS are what I play on a regular basis. I'm surprised no-one has mentioned NetKar Pro. Do we as a whole not like this game? I've played the demo and will probably end up buying it at some time.

I also play Colin McRae Rally 2005 for its arcade-ness and Richard Burns Rally but that is quite hard to get into.

If you download S2 you will be able to unlock the S1 cars and tracks and try out the new physics, the powerful RWDs are a lot easier to drive since the last update. None of this winning points to unlock cars either.

I tried NKPro but didnt really take to it, I also don't like that theres no online demo available to test the netcode before I part with my cash.

I know what you mean. Currently it isn't up to much. I think it will get better.

I tried a car out and found the steering quite difficult to control and adapt to. I also don't like the display only working in the paid for version. Makes it a lot harder to start the car up etc. There is/was a way around that but I couldn't get it to work.

The rFactor demo had online capability and the LFS stuff is quite good so from a demo point of view NKPro won't catch as many people using the demo to convert to the full game.

I would have bought S2 ages ago but the lack of tracks just puts me off...:(
Hmm I think there are enough. And some of them have some pretty good layouts to use. I use the long layouts as they are just wild and hard to get round in a decent time without a visit to the gravel traps or a smack against a wall.

Although there are 6 'locations', there are well over 30 tracks, though that includes reversed tracks as well.

Tis a good game for a demo but they have to sort out the physics properly before I part with my money.
Taking a small corner at like 35mph leaves a trail of smoke and you end up sideways.

MC_Bob

you just need to get a setup that doesnt go sideways, there are plenty of setups, and if your using anything like a keyboard and mouse, your always going to have problems with that in LFS, ideally you want a Wheel and Pedals for some more control

Aye, I use an XBOX controller which I soldered a USB dongle to.
'Tis quite good, since the physics aren't quite right on for LFS, I tend to go to drift rooms and own noobs in there. It's actually quite good for that when you get a setup sorted out.

I partly agree, i want to see some tracks suited to the F1 car. The city tracks are too tight and Aston is too open and 95% full throttle on the open circuits.

I really enjoy LFS, and would really encourage anyone into racing games to try it as its the only racing sim i cant leave alone. Just came off 35 laps of blackwood (1 hour 5 mins) in the LX6, could have done more. The physics arent quite there yet, but they are one of the best ive came across, GTR is nice but it relys on strong force feedback to give feel to the car, whereas LFS delivers the fell of the car even with FF disabled. RFactor is a really nice game, but i find any longer than 30 misn on it and im bored as its a game that you have to be focused in, whereas LFS you can have a bit of fun kicking the tail out.
