Driving home an untaxed car?

Hi all,

I've just bought a new car from Car Giant, and have decided that I cannot wait till Wednesday and must pick it up tomorrow. Can anyone give me guidance on how I can do this legally if it's not taxed?

I intend to insure myself with day insure tomorrow morning and drive home. However, the car will be untaxed. If I can't get taxed, will my day insure insurance be rendered invalid in the case of an accident? I will get it taxed online when I get home, assuming it's the new style MOT document (last MOT was 16/01/2006), otherwise I guess I'll have to wait.

Cheers,

Nick

It will have the new style MOT certificate so taxing it when you get home won't be a problem. However, if you were to have an accident without having a valid tax disc, the insurance company may refuse to pay. So its not really recomended - can't Car Giant tax it for you at the time of purchase?

The salesman told me that I would be fine driving home without it - he says that's what everyone does...

I'm going to play it safe, I'll get them to tax it/get someone at home to do it online when I know the MOT details.

You CANNOT tax a car using a certificate of insurance from Dayinsure - it specifically states this on the covernote.

Secondly, I can see no way that an insurance company could legally get out of paying out, at least third party costs, due to something as trivial as no excise license - this has zero bearing on the safety of the car.

It would be a police matter

After my crash the insurance company wanted a copy of the MOT, registration document and my license (they never mentioned tax)

It's illegal to use or park an unlicensed vehicle on the public highway. Thats partly why garages have trade plates. If you get stopped you will probably get away with it if you get the avergae policeman as I was told in the past the paperwork is enormous and very complicated in these situations.

As to insurance I would think you will not be insured any more than third party without tax but even then it is dodgy.

Are CarGiant unable to tax the car using their insurance?

Just wondering as when I bought my car, the dealer I bought it from included 6 months tax and sorted it using his insurance...

I picked up and drove my car home w/o tax

I rang up my insurance Co. first and asked if my policy was still valid without tax. it was.

as long as you are insured an MOT'd you *should* be alright. unless you are having a particulary bad day

[Ninja edit] :o

Will double check again with them then, but I'll wait till I get home to sort out tax. I swear to God this is the first time I've ever been out of bed before 9 on a Sunday, I can't wait to pick it up!

Not true im afriad, its a nice simple form we fill out and then send it off to the DVLA for them to deal with it.

I bought my car from Car Giant last Monday and didn't get it taxed till Friday.

The only reason for this was because I had to wait for my insurance certificate to come though the post. During this time I drove a little bit, no more than a couple of miles, and I didn't park anywhere (was just picking up and dropping people off) and I also carried my MOT & Ownership docs and Car Giant Receipt in case I got stopped.

Although there is no legal right that allows you to drive with no tax whilst you wait for insurance you'd have to either be driving like an idiot in the first place or get the worst jobsworth copper in the world to get done for driving with no tax in cases like this.
