Driving in snow

Not sure why its a problem that people are driving at 50 on a motorway though theres 3 other lanes :D

We only get 2 lanes up here or it wouldn't be a problem :(. It really grinds my gears when i see an arctic lorry overtaking someone doing 50 and you know theres nothing the guy in the 18wheeler can do about it.

Wouldn't it be better on the motorway in snowy conditions if artic lorrys were allowed in all lanes to break up the snow and ease driving for cars?

Slow & smooth, works for 44ton artics, should be fine for piddly little cars. ;)

You have a weight advantage! All three of our lorries got stuck last night. One being an automatic was terrible and look the longest! Also inexperienced driver. Soon as he got some weight over the wheels it was better but still sliding everywhere!

My clio is doing very well in the snow. The snow keeps hitting my gear linkage and knocking it out of gear though :o

On variable speed limit motorways there is no reason at all to towing vehicles and HGVs them to the inside two lanes when a variable speed limit is in force. It may even help ease the congestion.

I think the reason they don't is that tecnically you're supposed to do 10mph less than the speed limit unless it's 30mph.

LOL i went there once. They had a Monorail.

Had being the operative word.

It's not there now - it was in use for about 4 minutes then the stanchions moved due to subsidence and it was mothballed & various surveyors/land quality management firms got their behinds sued.

Everyone lol'd.

It took me about 3 minutes tonight to get to the top of my road from the bottom. It's about 150 yards long, was carpeted with snow and typically has about a foot either side clearance with parked cars either side. I've never had to concentrate so much...

Traction control was going mental and I kept having to boot it to get any traction uphill - each time I did this it had the negative effect of pulling me over to one side so had to do a *lot* of compensating with steering. I ended up parking in a nearby wide street instead as I thought some incompetent pleb is likely to smash a load of cars up.

My sister's front garden wall has already been smashed in tonight - she lives facing a road entering a junction. When we got back to her place we found tyre marks in the snow, up on the pavement, and up into her garden along with a load of footprints where the **** had gathered up the evidence (numberplate, I assume) and driven off :(

Good job her car wasn't parked in front of the house as usual I guess - I've told her to park along the road instead in future. At least the ***** who drove off will have screwed front shocks and mangled front bodywork.

Staying in 2nd gear doing about 4-10mph worked for me most of the way, and not taking for granted cars approaching when at a give way sign. Stopping distances are multiplied by ridiculous amounts in these conditions and I thought my car was broken when the TC and ABS were kicking in - the brake pedal kept pushing my foot back and I started panicking at first! Good experience methinks.

most cars your better off turning the Traction control off in snow, as it just goes nuts

Wish I'd seen this thread yesterday, might have given me the edge and helped me not crash into a wall. :(

nearly had a blunder last night, taking the corner to start coming up the hill, something i wanted to maintain reasonable momentum so as not to lose to mavity, lost all grip in the corner and went side on into a curb, thankfully the speed at which this was turn combined with some truly monstrous sidewalls means my alloys, and everything else in the wheel assembly, live to fight another day...was a bit of a struggle up that hill though

Think next time its snowing, I will be using the bike, decided to give the British public another chance, but it appears that the train system gets only worse and worse as time progresses.

Things got of to a flying start when the bus to train station turned up on time, at any rate, I arrived at the right time to catch the train. Things were even looking up when I spotted a heater in the station.

Yep a station which is almost OUTSIDE (One of those very tall covered stations), had an electric heater next to the information desk. So I pilfered it and was quiet happy until about 18:10 at which the train was meant to arrive by...

Seven minutes later, we had three announcements each changing the arrival time of the train, one of which changed to some time in the past. "Oh well, its only way there, its ok"...

Fast forward to the way back, and a short walk to Parkway station. After not having to take the trian in a fair while, the timetabled revelaed it usually comes to platform 1. 10 minutes later and there was no sight of the bloody platform, seems there's only 2, 3 and 4... How that makes even remote sense, I have no idea.

A bit of rumuging at the departure terminal revelaed the next train to Temple Meads was at 40 past, "Thats cool" I thought, only to mistakenly not notice it was 40 past 9...

Having a closer look at the digital timetable, revealed that the next train that actually stops at temple meads was supposed to arrive at about 48 past 8, it actually arrived 30 minutes later, but infront of the 8:28 train... How they managed that, I am not sure anyone knows...

So all in all, what usually was a nice 15-20 minute motorbike ride, turned into 1 and a half hours of tourture by our public transport. And here they want to get everyone out of their cars... Good luck I say. Never going to catch a train again... EVER ><

well all went wrong today...

first got stuck on a really icy road and bike got way to hot so had to stop for 10mins, finally got going and then fell off on a hump back bridge, bike just went sideways on own, nothing I could do. Let bike fall on me to keep damage down, hurt like hell though... some kind motorist then pushed me 1/4 mile to work.

not much damage...

It was easier around Bristol, or at least the roads I was looking at going onto. Other the car parks at both destinations, the way looked fine and gritted, don't think there was any ice, until today :o.

Thankfully I can walk to actual work *Pfew*. Unlucky Flukester:(

True I suppose.

BTW, our DAFs and Scanias are all auto's. ;)

thats a very long winded way of saying "I went too fast round a corner"
