Driving Lessons - How many?

I had 7 lessons before doing my test, but that was pre-theory test and I'd driven around a trading estate for a few hours with my Dad. Basically told the instructor on my first lesson that I wanted to be put in for the test.

I dont think I'll ever really understand why it takes some people 40-50 or even 60 lessons. I mean its not that hard, surely?

Well, I'd go one step further... I'd say someone who ends up taking that many lessons, or fails a certain number of times, aren't allowed to retake it for several years (if at all).

It's always struck me as strange that we have pretty tough exams in other aspects of life, but to pilot a 1.5+ tonne piece of metal around we just have to do a pretty basic test that doesn't cover many imo vital things.

When I passed my test there was no theory test, no hazard perception test (is there one of these now?), just a practical test that taught me nothing about motorways, reacting to hazards, handling skids, etc.

Ah well.

I think it's the quality of the tuition. Some of the stuff I was taught as a learner was verging on ridiculous (I can compare as I had 2 instructors - one sensible, one complete nutcase).

My younger brother is turning 17 in July and I'd love to teach him to drive. With his aptitude and a "no nonsense" approach to teaching him I reckon he could pass his test in a month. It's just a shame I live 100 miles away :(.

Usually because they don't have any way to practice outside of lessons, it depends where you live too, quite often you can spend 1/2 the lesson sitting in traffic just trying to get to a good area to practice whatever your instructor wants to do that lesson.

I'm sure if you add in all the practice time you had with family you'll be into pretty high numbers.

On the other hand, sometimes people are just rubbish
