Ahhh. My driving license has expired and I forgot all about it! By almost a month!

Not sure what made me check but I immediately renewed it online.

Looks like im safe to drive reading this link https://assets.publishing.service.g...i-drive-while-my-application-is-with-dvla.pdf

Based on the fact I had a license and I'm only driving what was allowed by my previous license.

I think the only thing now would be if I've somehow managed to get a ticket in the last 3 weeks that has yet to turn up at my door. But I don't drive much and only drive familiar routes and I drive within the speed limit, so that should be fine.

Apparently quite common:

I read that elsewhere I can only assume people havn't updated their addresses after moving so didn't receive the notification in the post
I had the notification. No excuse, but had a lot going on and shifted the reminder off the desk to make space for my son and his mates...

Surprising how easy it is at times to miss stuff when you're usually on top of things like this.

You are unlikely to get into trouble unless there was out of date information pertinent to some given scenario on the expired license - it doesn't revoke your license to drive or stop you driving during the process of renewal - if you do it via the Post Office they'll print you off a receipt that covers your license until the new one arrives even.

Mine 'expires' next March. £14 just to change the photo, absolute **** take.
The brilliance in my case is they take it from my passport, which was renewed a few years after my driving licence with the same photo.

So they are pulling in the same photo.

The photo is fine. Seems completely pointless.

Yeah, i had similar a couple of months ago. In my case the photo is already 9 years old, so by the time I have to renew it again, the photo will be almost 20 years out of date  complete waste of time and money!

I thought it was a 1k fine for driving without a valid license? Definitely was if you didn't update your address etc
I believe that could be the case.
My research shows that as long as your entitlement hasn't expired, and all details are correct it's typically a £50 fine.

No worries, they've processed my license and it's on its way.

I imagine if you're pulled over, drunk/speeding, with wrong address and ..they'd be adding 1k to the bill for you along with a rack of points.

Theoretical £1k fine but in practice I've never heard of anyone actually being fined (IANAL of course). But either keep the old photocard until the new one arrives or take a picture of it before you dispose of it. The DVLA sometimes miss extra entitlements when creating the new license. So compare them when the new one arrives. e.g. quite a few motorcyclists have lost their entitlement and didn't realise until a few years later when it is almost impossible to prove anything.

Your entitlement doesn't expire but should any of your details be required for some reason and are incorrect on the expired licence you can be fined. Where they are relevant in the case of an incident, etc. a fine is more likely.

Just moved house and so got a new (free ;) ) photocard issued. Not sure about the latest design, feels a bit tryhard-fake-ID to me compared with the previous designs. As I've moved quite a bit in the last ten years, I've seen a few...

I applied to renew my license today, it doesn't expire until 19/09/23 but you can renew it up to three months before. Today was the earliest I could do it.

Did it online but they rejected the photo I uploaded that I took on my iPad. So I got some passport photos done, that cost £8.50 for four of them it used to be £5 ten years ago.

Handed them in and they took one of them, it cost me £50 to renew my license as well. Should receive it in up to two weeks.

Why £50, it's £14 to renew online, or £17 by post.

I’ve been waiting for the DVLA to fix an issue with updating my address for 2 years.

Thankfully, my current registered address on there is my fathers, so I see all correspondence, but it’s frustrating.

Have had a few phone calls with DVLA and they don’t know when it’ll be sorted. Just won’t update online for some reason, and the postal letters haven’t been received a couple of times.
