ive still got my counter part, i think i remember hearing a few years back perhaps ? you can legally throw it away now ?

Mine predates any kind of photograph, it's purely paper. No counterpart, no photo part, just a paper licence.
I'm sure there are still loads of us with these.
There are no legal requirements to renew a paper licence.
(/edit - Until one becomes very old)

Yeah you've been able to bin them for years now.
in 7 years i become officially very old 
That's not strictly speaking true. If you change your address, no longer have the paper licence to hand as its either danged lost or stolen or change your name then you need to renew your licence and get a photo card.

updating driving license photo with it's renewal ?
seems that if you do this online, using a passport, you have to use existing (old) passport photo,
or if you do it by post (pay more) you can send a photo, but they will scan it (poorly) themselves.
My passport needs renewing soon anyway, where I could send a new digital photo, and then renew driving license.
however may not be returned before driving license runs out, so may have to abstain from driving for a week - hmmh
