Hi guys i have recently retired and would like to treat myself by replacing my 6yr old pc which is having a few problems , i built it myself but have been out of the loop for all this time , i have about 2 grand to spend and would like a gaming pc , my problem is do i buy a pre built pc ie ryzen or wait for an alderlake set up which is more future proof ie ddr5 etc there are some nice amd prebuilds ,but do i build my own ,or as as i Said wait for alderlake and can i afford their prices ie cpu/mboard ,gpu .any advise would be welcome.

It's a peculiar time
Normally build your own would be the advice
But with GPU prices and poor availability
It can actually be better to buy a pre built pc
Currently I would say no great advantage with ddr5
But higher cost
Much faster ddr5 will of course come and cost will drop
But there's a shortage of pmic for ddr5
Making it the latest item scalpers have jumped on
Alder lake has certainly put Intel back in the game
Though ryzens are still great CPUs too
Still using a 3900x and to be honest see no need to consider upgrading
Guess it's partly down to what you will use the pc for
Whether a pre built alder lake is in budget I don't know as not really looked

i like the prebuilt Sabre with the 12600k in it which would see me ok for a few years and then when ddr5 and motherboards and grafics card settle down i would have a path to follow ? or am i going the wrong path . there are some nice ryzen builds as well but i cant make up my mind .

Excellent value with the BF saving, I would buy before that ends tbh. I would stick to DDR4 for now , the extra cost for DDR5 is not really worth it at the moment. If you went for that PC then I would ring up and get them to change the PSU for 80plus gold unit from a more highly regarded brands such as Corsair or Seasonic. You can ofc pick the case you like best out of those available, I would personally go for the Lian Li Lancool II.

AMDs Ryzen 3 systems are still good at the right price but cannot see a better option on that side of things than the Sabre.

Hi, New poster here, though I've been an OC customer for many years now and lurk here every now and then.

Just wanted to say I have gone for a very very similar system to you. Took the decision to go DDR4 for now and put that budget into better all around components where it will really count. These 12th Gen Intel chips really look a step up for them. Excited for mine to be built now.

Yeah the sabre looks okay
As said perhaps change psu
Perhaps 32gb ram depending on whether you do stuff that
Benefits from more ram
Can save a little by getting it with no operating system
Your current windows 7? Key will probably still work
It's not exactly a straight forward upgrade path
Since would be a motherboard and ram replacement in future
Possibly CPU too depending how soon Intel change sockets again
Historically they changed lot more than AMD have

But likewise if you go AMD the next refresh will be
Last AM4 after about 5 years they will be moving to AM5
Their reply to alder lake
So AMD would be motherboard, ram and CPU replacement also

Edit
Probably also agree lancool case
Or a phanteks option
Though cases are subjective when it comes to looks
But the lancool and phanteks may offer better airflow
