Driving on autopilot

What is it with all the greetings lately, nearly all posts start with Good Morning, good day, Dear home owner lol.

It was an in joke, now everyone's doing it, and its wearing thin ;)

Ive just got back from a party in New Cross. Had to drop a mate off at Orpington on the way through, and had a nice sedate early-hours cruise along the M25. Only from J4 to near Dartford Crossing, but a nice steady 70mph indicated cruise + empty road + Heart 106.2 in the background = my mind starting to wander somewhat :)

Yup.. most days when im going to work, and its a set route, and most of it is NSL Roads, you can keep the same speed for most of the journey.. you think to yourself wow.. im here lol

Very much so. Often I'll sort of 'wake up' after a 15 mile journey and wonder how the hell I got there.. I think the brain just maps the roads and off you go.

I used to get it when driving from call to call and being on the handsfree.

Id be driving for a good 30 miles, chatting away, then you suddenly relise your past those lights, that speed camera, the tricky little t junction and the sprial round about - oopppsss

Amazing how the brain does go into auto...

im not sure if it is good or not... part of me wants to be aware of whats going on right now but then I also feel that stuff that you can do subconsciously is always performed better (ever try to think about your breathing? screws up the rhythm :p)

I agree. :)

I've not particularly noticed it whilst driving, but I used to get it on my paper round. Managed to deliver about 10 papers without realising and had to actually check in my bag to see if I'd delivered them:confused:.

Yep, had all of that. Sometimes wish it happened more often, since I think my driving is probably more sociable when it's like that rather than my normal ignorant and sometimes quite angry style.

Sorry to all those that have been cut-up by me in the past :o

In the Elise, never. In the Mondeo, all the time.

I could probably go to sleep halfway through my journey in the Mondeo and not notice, it's yawn inducing.

Does anyone else go out at a weekend and end up at work forgetting entiley they were supposed to go in the opposite direction

I have got up before and started driving to a customer site which I was due to visit on Monday, on a saturday.

Went 5 miles or so before realising :)

I remember Jasper Carrott doing a bit on this before. He'd been driving for about 20 minutes and suddenly thought "Shouldn't I be in the front?... Hang on, this isn't my car!"

Its commonly known as 'commuter amnesia' - hence why you always 'switch off' if you're driving a route you've been driving for ages.

gah beat me to it!
yeah its very common and quite interesting that you can "train" your brain to such things the thing is your not really switching off its more your memory is not "saving" the data since you have seen it so many time over and over its regarded as pointless

My girlfriend was telling me about it (just about to graduate psychology) obviously its is a bit more complex than how i described it but quite fascinating :)

i actually thought its just another form of muscle memory, so many things you do in life without thinking about it like when you walk you don't put one foot down then consciously think right ill lift the other and move that, instead the actions are learned and handled by your subconscious

because all the actions of driving are learned and your not consciously thinking about doing them necessarily you don't necessarily remember them unless something out of the ordinary happens that puts your conscious mind on to the subject, i weigh up autopilot driving to be about the same as walking i dont consider it any more dangerous, after all you might not be thinking about walking but if you see dog muck on the floor you still consciously avoid it
