Driving pet hates...

On driving standards. Over here the average standards are not that bad. However I drive mostly in rush hour when/where people tend to know what they are doing and if you they do something annoying it's probably been done delibrately, well calculated and with attitude, so gets some respect.

The main issue is the minimum standards are falling, especially demonstrated by the elderly and young mums with 4 kids in the car on Saturday afternoons. There are no traffic police* around to do anything about it either. People get their license, hardly drive at all, forget everything and then just carry on as their driving standards diminish to "highly dangerous".

*I've even watched a normal police car sat watching while 3 people went through a red light in front of them... did nothing.

My top pet hate is people who stop and giveway at a roundabout when there is nothing coming!
:D Exactly what my Mrs does.. no looking ahead, just stop, look, realise nothing is there and set off... I have to bite my tongue pretty hard..

What's usually the most annoying is that they stop for no reason, causing your to nearly rear end them, then wait, look, look again, then pull off when something IS coming and nearly cause an accident.

What's even worse though is some new bungalows are being built on one of the fields next to the entrance to our road. The builders and tradesmen are dirty gits. Same thing, open door and just throw out whatever's in the van or car. Site manager in his defence put bins in but they're just too lazy to use them. One didn't appreciate it when I was out and picked up the half cup of coffee he'd just thrown out and put it back through his window.

My mother ended up doing similar after 3 weeks of nicely asking the builders opposite to take their rubbish home or just to put it in her bin just she went a step further and emptied her kitchen bin into their van through an open window in full view of them. They got the message.

I also hate people that undertake when it's clear the reason you've pulled out is a slow moving vehicle in the left hand lane. I'm all for the proper use of lanes for overtaking but the number of people that just use it as an excuse to barrel up on the inside to undertake a couple of vehicles that have already pulled out really "boils my ****". They normally then have to either brake like crazy not to rear end the slow moving vehicle or dangerously "cut in"

Don't pull out far too early then?

I don't but also don't want to leave it to the last moment, either way it's not an excused to "undertake" when you can clearly see there is a slow moving vehicle that the other vehicles have pulled out to avoid.

The people that use it as an excuse to undertake a couple of cars, barrel up to about 1 inch behind the slow moving vehicle then aggressively try an pull back out are just idiots!

I've only ever seen Audi-style lane weaving like this happen when cars are sitting in the overtaking lanes unnecessarily. If I could continue happily in lane 1 past you and then calmly pull out to overtake the slower vehicle, you're probably doing it wrong.

Nope, the only reason there is enough space is they travel far too closed to the slow moving vehicle.

What if the other pumps are busy and they don't want to use their card? The pumps at the Morrisons don't even say which are pay at pump ones until your at it.

I fill up at Costco these days when ever possible to avoid all these annoyances, loads quicker.

The answer to that is already in the post you quoted ;)

Just leave the kids in the car when you go pay, its easy.

Or not and continues to be the responsible parent that I am.

I've witnessed similar occurrences, but then again when you realise that this is a force that told a 10yr old victim who'd dialled 999 after being subjected to a violent robbery by 6 assailants to "go home and we'll call you back later" - South Yorkshire Police, Doncaster.

What do you expect to happen in the couple of minutes you don't have eyes on them for? If they can't undo car seats they're not going to cause a problem:confused:. I would say its more responsible to be as quick as possible and not mess around getting them out the car (obviously if i'm doing shopping i would take them out). Not to mention all the signs that say kids should stay in cars.

Parenthood and logic don't often go hand in hand.

There's one roundabout on my way home that boils my **** every time I get to it.

Single carriageway, 300 yards before roundabout sign shows straight over for the exit most take, 200 yards before straight over is shown on a big sign for left lane, right lane for right turn only. 100 yards carriageway splits to two lanes, on both lanes it is painted right for right only and left for straight over.

Without fail every time im there at least two or three cars will pick the right hand lane and the proceed on the inside of the roundabout and at the last minute panic and pull off to the exit causing everyone else to slam on.

It isn't a merge exit either so it always ends up with two cars trying to force their way side by side back onto a single carriageway with usually heavy traffic on the opposite side.

That roundabout annoys me so much I refuse to let anyone merge now, it's made me a worse driver because people choose to ignore every single sign and indication for the right lane and still act like they have right of way. I've on a few occasions deliberately blocked people from being able to get onto the exit it annoys me that much, and I'm never like that while driving.

I'll see if I can find some picks from Google maps, because I can't for the life of me work out how people **** it up so much

*E - I've just checked, previously the road and signs were painted to have right hand lane painted for the straight over exit!! That explains it, must be a sat back issue causing it. Still no excuse for ignoring all the signs though*

Similar on my commute, dual carriageway ends in a roundabout, A47 is single carriageway after that. Left lane to continue straight, right lane to turn right. Inevitably when busy a queue forms for the A47 in the left lane so you get a load of people running down the right lane to either force their way in or loop the roundabout and cut in that way. See all sorts of road rage as the left lane backs up and stops moving. I either sit in the traffic angry or loop the roundabout and feel like a douche.

Often the case on roundabouts.
I had a road rage fit one day in Bury St Eds, I was running late and forgot I was supposed to fill the car up the night before. I went and filled it up and caught the start of the rush hour. The road backs up and exactly that happened, i stuck to the correct lane and then this guy comes hard to a halt just in front of me, half turned into my gap, indicating left, basically having jumped the queuing traffic but have reached the end of the wide exit from the roundabout. (people will queue round the outside lane, leaving the inside free so people can traverse this roundabout)
I ignored him (i was already seriously behind schedule) and as the traffic moved i went, he took objection to this and shot forwards trying to beat me to "my" gap. he didnt make it, same thing happened a few times, me sticking to my lane, him trying to beat me into the gap, At this point hes now literally half in the left lane, half in the right lane, completely on the white line. By now I am like WTF are you doing, hes trying harder and harder to stop me, getting closer and closer. After about 10-15 of these stop start attempts to get in front of me, he floors it and manages to overtake the van I was following. About 5 minutes later he is the vehicle in front of me as we get back to a two lane section, where he goes straight on and me right at the next roundabout.

I can understand why if he wasn't local he may have possibly thought the exit from the roundabout was a merge in turn (its not nor marked as such historically), but then you would have thought he would have approached the situation a little better, he was in the wrong and his attitude was what narked me. Had be seemed more oops I am in the wrong, can I possibly squeeze in I would have let him. However I suspect it was his standard form and most people would just back off. What his response would have been had he hit me (it was VERY close a couple of times), or had someone hit him coming the other direction I have no idea.

See I don't see an issue with that and I've done it several times. It's not dangerous and saves waiting behind 40+ cars when I'm on a deadline.
