I really do think that you could be the perfect driver, but show some bad nerves and you'll get failed on the silliest of things. I hid my test day nerves well and drove comfortably and confidently and the examiner did let a couple of things slide for that reason.
Same, I passed a 30mph sign at 40mph and didnt slow down until about 100yds into the 30mph zone. I instantly said, oops I just missed that 30sign then slowed. I was then a bit down as I was sure that was a fail.
Got back to the centre and he says I passed. I said what about the 30mph sign, I was told everyone speeds a little! He did say that the main thing was he felt safe with me and could see I was very observant (Had ridden bikes for 7years before taking my test). I think talking him through what I was seeing and doing helped, kind of like a running commentry so he knew why I may be holding back for a second until the harzard was no longer a hazard etc.
