Driving test: Is it true...

that they only let a certain amount of people pass a day? :p

Failed my test today for being cautious at a cross roads  Basically, a lollypop lady had walked out to my left to let a large group of people cross, i waited until the lollypop lady started to walk back to the kerb and I pulled out as the car opposite gave way to me. In the lesson before my test, my instructor had even told me if in doubt, just hold back and go slowly, which I did here, but still failed :(

Got back to the test centre and it seemed as if the examiner was trying to find something to fault me on, as she couldn't really justify why I had failed. So perhaps I wouldn't of failed if I had just carried on and possibly hit one of the pedestrians :(

Was she in the right for failing me? Quite had to say though really without being there i suppose :(

i got the same thing on my first test, no minors anywhere apart from 4 in one box for not pulling out of one busy junction while school was out, i didnt think i could have safely pulled out without either wheelspinning and being overly agressive or making other people slow down for me, which if id done either id have been failed.. bit of a pain in the a** but it happens! just go back and do it again, if you think you are good enough to pass you wont have a prob :p

Unfortunately flashing your lights is one of those things..

The instructor says its just to let them know you are there, but in reality and once you start driving without aid, you will come to know that you generally flash your lights to give way.

IE to let someone out of a junction.

The only thing I can think of is that I believe technically you're meant to wait until people are completely off crossings - if you were to start moving whilst she was still stood on the markings, then maybe that could be a major?

I think this is the reason as well as you stated you moved when the lollypop lady started to walk back to the kerb, you have to wait untill it is completely clear.
That sounds like a major to me.

I think sometimes they just 'know' if you're not ready to drive on the roads yet, so might make a big thing over a small mistake.

+1

I really do think that you could be the perfect driver, but show some bad nerves and you'll get failed on the silliest of things. I hid my test day nerves well and drove comfortably and confidently and the examiner did let a couple of things slide for that reason.

My friend was telling me something about this the other day. Like the test centres have a target with regards to failures, something ridiculous like 3 in 5 have to fail. But then I suppose ultimately you take the test, and if you don't screw up, you pass, simples. No idea whether it's true..

I got 7 minors for looking in my mirror at the same time as signalling, rather than before. :(

Which makes no sense, as long as you look then it shouldn't make any difference when you indicate.

Mind you, no one drives to their standards. Who indicates the whole time whilst on a large round about? That is indicating right, until you want to turn off, then indicate left. Who still uses the DSA shuffle steering method?

I think its just a rumor people have made up when they don't know why they have failed/ don't think their failure is justified.

Scan your little fail slip so we can take a look :)

Ps don't worry mate take it on the chin and get applying for another one asap

TBH, it is just a matter of jumping through hoops, filling the boxes, etc for them.

Both my driving instructor and the examiner who passed me told me this. The problem is that you then get people let through who aren't actually ready to drive on their own yet manage to jump through those hoops fine, and people stuck in the opposite position forking out time and time again.

no

but its the case that some of the examiners are so impossibly picky you'd think so.

Some might even go so far as to say they form an oppinion of that person based upon the manorism and dress etc.. and pre judge them and decide in advance if they want them to pas or fail. Its human nature to pre judge people after all

its why they have so much trouble getting an impartial jury at big trials.

"Examiners only pass a certain number of people a day"
"Examiners only pass a certain number of people a month"
"The examiner didn't like me"
"The examiner was having a bad day"
"It was the examiners last day before a long holiday/break"

NO

You are simply not yet ready to drive on public roads unassisted.

I had 3 minors on my test and passed, 1 was for hesitation at a junction as I couldn't judge how quick the other car was coming 1 was for fudging reversing round a corner and the other was for bumping the curb going round a stupidly tight turning.

The examiner was ACE though and calmly explained what I had done wrong and what I should have done instead. Turns out he was an ex army driving instructor and his instructions were always clear, he did say before we started that if I didn't understand an instruction to just ask him as it was better to double check instead of getting it wrong.

I was panicking beforehand as I had slept funny the night before and my neck was killing me when I turned my head.
