Driving tests and vehicle features

I got taught how to do a non ABS assisted emergency stop even though I was learning in a brand new Mk2 Focus with ABS. Not really seeing the issue? Surely your instructor just taught you how to do it without - i.e. what to do if it starts to skid?

Very funny. Not.

My point being the test moves with the times.

That was the point of that part of the test , you had to bring the car to a controlled halt with out excessive skidding and under control, it was stated at the time that it was the complete oppisit to your thinking. ie you would have to do the test in a non ABS car as it took the skill out of that part of the test.

I only got taught how to do it with ABS, had to learn on my own later how to do it without.
When i started as well, i changed down on braking which apparently your not supposed to do anymore, also block shifting say 1st to 3rd i didn't like that.
I hope for the day the test includes more than simply pointing at the washer fluid and oil cap as far as maintenance goes. Changing a wheel should be part of it as should controlling over-steer.

f you were only taught to do an emergency stop with only ABS then your instructor wasn't doing what you paid him to do. But to be honest in most cases people do get taught but simply forget what was said to them.

The driving test has evolved over the years to match the technology that's found in modern vehicles. In some areas it still lags behind. Many people want motorway driving to be part of the test; there are arguments for and against it. Lots of people hark back to the day when they learned to drive but many things have changed over the years. Skid control (understeer/oversteer) is now covered in the driving syllabus, together with basic maintanance. I'm not sure changing a wheel would ever become part of the test in it's present form simply because of the time constraints.
