Driving to manchester on friday from London

Definatly not!

M25
M40
M42
M6 Toll
M6
M52

Much much faster.
I left at 4pm on a friday and managed to get to manchester using that route at 8pm. And that included the hour I spent stationary outside heathrow in the roadworks.
Had I used the M1 it would have taken a lot lot longer.

Meh!

I'd seriously consider M1>A50>A500>M6/J16. You miss out all the traffic around the West Midlands, the A50 is dual carriageway all the way down with about 5 roundabouts between the M1 and Stoke. By the time you get into Stoke and onto the A500 (the "D" road) most of the traffic should be gone too.

That's what I'd do. I used to travel up to Manc just about every week, and that's the route I took. M1 will get heavy around J21-24 if you hit it after 4pm, and M6 will be heavy from J16 onwards. Better than being sat in queues all the way through BHM though.

A50 is never jammed or stopped.
