Driving while texting

Point is young drivers are likely to do it, yet they are the ones that will watch it, laugh and ignore it...as you've done.

And it proves my point perfectly. I can't get the 'message' because it's patronizing and stupid.

It isn't a measure of (im)maturity to find someone's attempt at appearing 'shocking' to your demographic pathetic.

At the end of the day, this is illegal.

So dont do it, or risk a fine and points. If you do crash doing this, and are found out, expect a reckless driving charge!

I can't see how it's patronising at all or stupid...this is what I'm getting at, you find it those things, when to be honest, it isn't it's just trying to get a message out to people.

They've used young people as they are more likely to text whilst driving...although I'm sure older people do as well.

With them using a young person as the driver and wanting to show the video directly to those in schools/sixth forms/colleges, I think it's clear that it is intended for a younger audience. If they wanted to reach everyone they could have done so very easily by getting doing one of those hard hitting 30 second ads with 'typical' people and shown it on national TV.

Unfortunately, IMO, putting an oldster, or whatever, as a driver would then lead the younger generation to think, at least subconsciously, that that can't happen to me because I'm younger, my reflexes are better, older people have to focus too much when texting whereas I was brought up with it therefore I wouldn't have a problem.

I presume those who text whilst driving also think it's fine to have a drink or two before driving even though they'd be "under the limit".

I have no problem with having a drink and then driving. Texting and driving is not on though, very, very dangerous.

You mean you see no problem. Having no problem is something different altogether.

Yeah that is a more accurate way of putting it.
However, I am in control of the vehicle and the alcohol isn't having a massive affect on me so I don't really see the problem.

The same could well be said for being on the phone or texting.

Personally I dislike it all and don't like it when people do text, phone or drink, no matter how sure they are that they have control.

I think when you're giving or going to be giving someone a lift and the opportunity to do any of the above comes up, what it comes down to as much as anything else is whether you'd be happy if they were giving you a lift and doing what you're considering doing. If the answer is no, then clearly you shouldn't do it from an ethical point of view, whether or not it's within the bounds of the law.

IMO it's a bit different if you're the only one in the car. It perhaps shouldn't be, as there're still other drivers on the road, of course, but somehow you're less responsible for them.. I suppose they can at least try to avoid you if you do something silly, whereas the person you're giving a lift to would just be screwed. Plus, with texting/phoning, there'll be times when you can do that without being a greater risk to other road users - e.g. empty road - whereas there'll never be a time (other than stationary traffic) when you'll not be a greater risk to your passenger.

But a lot of it does depend on the road situation. For example, driving through town I wouldn't be entirely comfortable with having a (handsfree) phone call even just by myself, due to the nature of town driving needing lots of attention. But on a motorway, I'd be perfectly happy to have a phone call even with passengers, aside from it being a bit rude :p and I wouldn't mind the driver doing likewise, if I were being driven, just as long as it's a safe road with no surprises.
