Drobo alternatives ?

Hi I have a drobo and its full and need more storage. Just to expensive to buy another drobo.

Just wondering if there is some other cheaper option, maybe a raid device or something?

There are a few alternatives. Is it just a NAS you require?

Synology, but decent nas cost money no matter what make..

What does a Drobo do?

I'm thinking a HP Microserver for £240 (£140 after cashback) and stuffing it with 5 disks is cheaper? Perhaps I'm missing something

The main feature is being able to mix and match disk sizes in a protected array without losing too much space. They are also very hands-off and easy for novice users. You could do this on a Microserver with UnRAID but it's obviously more hassle to set up.

I'm a Microserver fan myself, have one with 8TB as a combination ESXi server with some VM's and my backup NAS. Great little machines for the money.
