Guys i have dropped my 2TB hard drive onto the floor while it was powered off and now once i plugged it in it is clicking and making a noise.

It took ages for the system to boot with it in and managed to get into the file system and tried to drag stuff off but it just went to " not responding "

What can i do guys ? Need help as it was my backup with all my pictures of the little ones being born etc etc..

Thanks

You could try putting it in the frezzer but i don't know if that will help or not.

You only real option is to send it to a data recovery place where they will put the disks from the drive into a working drive and try and recover your data.

Freezer trick may work. Put it in a sandwich bag in there for a few hours, take it out and plug in right away - it sometimes allows you to pull off some data.

Basically you didn't want to drop it...

I know it always is horrible though, I've been close a few times but i keep my drives safe in my PC.

fridge trick rarely works but worth a try...

once I gave the hdd a good whack (hit it flat on the solid top flat case part) and it booted up and quickly copied the data :)

overwise try pc image data recovery, think they got a no fix no fee policy.... aint used em but there website looks good, also try contacting WD support see what they offer if none works.

One thing you can try is run an OS off an alternate source, so a Live Linux CD of Ubuntu or something, see if you can access the data and pull it off to another hard drive.

Yeh, try the freezer. The pictures may be corrupt like mine were though when i lost some a few years ago.

Backup important stuff to another drive is the way to go

Freezer trick is generally for a drive thats had problems with either heat expansion of the PCB (fracturing) or the heads not managing to locate sectors due to expansion and contraction.

It shouldnt really help for something thats been dropped.

If these are pics of your kids being born etc.. i'd not mess with the drive at all, send it to be recovered as i'm suspecting this is precious data to you. Dropping the drive likely caused internal mechanical damage that a freezer or software can't undo.

once I smacked a click hdd on the floor and it spinned up and got detected afterwards....
told the customer i saved her £700 data recovery and she didnt even say thx....

Clicking usually means a head crash, in which the heads that usually hover nanometers above the platters and read/write the data are now grinding grooves into them instead. Avoid powering it up as you are just worsening an already bad problem. If you want to try and recover data yourself you need to NOT BOOT TO IT AT ALL, instead use a live linux cd which you will need to get from a friends internet/in work/spare system or whatever.

Meanwhile you need to contact a specialist data recovery firm and get a quote for recovering data. Bear in mind though that they may not be able to recover all or even any of the data you want and will still charge you a fortune.

These options have been said to you already several times in the thread. There are no others.
