Dropped Kerbs /faint

This may sound daft, but if OP did it himself or used a none approved contractor, what would happen?

I expect the council would not even notice this having been done, it is not like they inspect each and every road is it?

Likely they wouldn't - but if someone reported you or if you somehow made a monumental balls up and went through a pipe or something (no idea how but hey) then they would string you up by the balls.

Plus it would need to be safe, for example if you did it yourself and someone tripped and broke their leg because one of the slabs was a cm too high, you could also be liable.

Council approved monopoly here too. Just paid £1,100 and £350 fee to the council to have it done.

It does seem very steep given that the driveway itself was £2,700 for block paving and re-rendering walls, and took 4 days. The crossover only took half a day in total.

You can do it yourself or use your own contractor. You simply have to apply for the license to work on the public highway.

The indemnities rest with you though and the cost of putting it right if you get it wrong is your responsibility or worse case damage some services and it can be bankrupting.

Some independent contractors will accept the liability, some pass it back to you.

We've got planning permission to drop the kerb outside the front of our house. Our council require an approved contractor (from a fairly long list) to do this and the quotes we're getting are coming in around £1,300 + VAT.

Am I missing something? Is it really that expensive to drop a kerb? Searching seems to suggest nearer £1,000. Is it a usual case of Cambridge premium?

The quote includes 3 bullnose and a pair of ramps, and full construction of the path if necessary (I'm guessing it will be).

I feel like this is the kind of job that would take me an afternoon (albeit not legally)..

I was looking into this last year. I have the option to be a strip of land that runs alongside my current drive way and asked about lowing the curb. The reply I got was £2400. South Norfolk Council fixed charge. I still have not bought the strip due to a legal issue so never chased about the price. I was hoping I was speaking to a poorly informed person on the phone though when they told me the price......
