Totally random but i've had some success with shocked drives before by wrapping them up in something water tight and wacking them in a freezer for 24 hours then getting as much data as I can off before it dies again. Something to do with the shock it gets from the cold constricts the platter enough to at least spin (works on old drives that stopped spinning or locked up) and this sometimes breathes enough life into the thing to recover at least some stuff.
*Do your research first though as i just googled it and there seems to be more reasons to not try this than try it. Could be a fair last ditch attempt if the fella decides that he doesn't want to go ahead with professional recovery.
