Went on a BMW event today where we drove the new 7-Series aswell as S-class and A8

New 7 is amazing drove 740i and 730d cant believe how much they have moved the game on after driving them back to back with the competition.

New tech like Side view camera's, Dynamic drive and the new active steering with rear wheel steering are excellent.
The ride is better than an S-class the interior is unbelievable especially with rear professional media pack on a LWB.

740i was the best car ive ever driven.

I am sure it will be epic, both as a car and as a place to watch epic depreciation in front of your eyes. Not sure you'll be selling many in the current climate but I suspect there will be some cracking details on the old model??

If the last one is anything to go by 6month old cars will be mega value! All our old ones have gone now. We moved the last of them by offering them for £399 a month which looks like a very cheap car.
The new one is the first BMW which ive come across which is genuinely well specced as standard.

It's a shame they didn't have a S8 rather than A8, I think you would have changed your mind then.. The S8 is probably the most impressive car I've been in, and this one was all trimmed in carbon on interior with full B&O sound system and the lambo developed v10 (lifted from a gallardo) with 450bhp or so hmmmm :D

So true in many of its previous incarnations.... :)

I'm yet to try a new 7 but have an invite to a BMW 7 event soon. :)

They will undoubtedly remain "King of the depreciation bargain hill"

I have no experience with the new 7-series, but if Bigweb is rating it above the W221 S-class then it will be miles better than an S8, given that the W221 S-class is better too. The S8 is an impressive car, but its not the best in its class.

The S8 is the worlds most pointless car, loved only by Ronin enthusiasts who will never buy one anyway which is why they are so exceptionally rare.

There is a reason why BMW have never made an M7. Seems Audi didn't realise.

This is a genuine question - why is it pointless?

I view the S8 in the same way as I view the 6.0 W12 VW Phaeton - really nice, fast, comfortable saloons. I wouldn't say either is pointless, in the same way that I wouldn't say any other car is pointless.

Agree with Fox's comments on the S8. It's a totally pointless car. I had one as a courtesy car for a week while my 4.2 was in for repairs.
You buy a large car like an A8, an S or a 7 in order to waft along in comfort. The lowered and stiffened suspension in the S8 ruins the major reason for owning a car of this type in the first place. The 20" wheels with run-flats don't help either. Essentially, the ride quality in the S8 is awful but the handling is still as poor as you would expect from a car of this size.
The best A8 is the 6.0 W12 LWB. As fast as the S8 but with the ride quality retained.

I must get myself down to BMW and grab a drive in the new 7. If it's as good as people are saying it might be the car to tempt me back in to a BMW again.

Ok. The A8. It's Audi's flagship luxury saloon. It's design breif is to enable executives to travel vast distances in complete comfort and emerge fresh after 600 mile journeys. Therefore, most of the car is geared towards this. It's large - very large. It's also reasonable heavy, etc etc.

So then along comes the S8 with pointless things like Carbon Fibre on the interior, firmer suspension which ruins its long distance effortless cruising ability but will still allow it to be embarrased over a twisty road by an oik in a Clio 172 purely by virtue of its size.

So whats the point? Whats it there for? Who will buy it?

Nobody, is the answer to that, hence you never see them.

IMHO The A6 is as big as the supersaloon range really needs to go.

Isnt that what the A8 6.0 W12 is for?

I hadn't really thought about it in those terms, I can appreciate your point though.
