Hi guys,

I want to get back in to drumming. I drummed about 5 years ago and I was using a cheap kit back then and it did the job fine.

I only did my first 2 grades, I moved house and didn't have the room to play again.

Now I have the room again and I'd like a new kit. I know I can't expect anything brilliant for £200, but could I still get something decent do you think?

Or wont it be worth playing at all? I'll want it PURELY for in house use, messing about on.

Thanks

Yeah I could go 2nd hand and see what I'd get. I wouldn't mind something crappy though just until I get to grips again.

Thanks for the replys guys. £200 would indeed be my max budget. I've seen some CB sets for around £200 new which seem popular to new drummers.

So guys, what should I get then? Should I just go for the new CB kit @ £200.00? I'm ready to order right now,

I've seen a 'dragon' kit on the bay of E for only £100, it's in great condition and they are about £200 new.

All those Dragon kits are collection only and the closest is Mansfield (maybe Newport) so do your petrol homework.
It may be cheaper just to buy the CB kit.

The dragon kit I saw on ebay was in Crewe mate. I know the CB kit will probably sound crap, I just hope it'd be ok for starting out on again.

This is going to have much more longevity than a CB kit, I have put together a few in the past. Awful things. I see where Neoni is coming from but they really really inferior.

2nd hand Pearl, then pop to a shop and get a Sabian cymbal pack for £100 and you will be doing well.

Just called that one, it's now sold.

I don't know if to just go with the CB..

I'd consider looking at second hand Roland kits on the bay - especially if you're just looking at playing at home. I think you'd need to stretch your budget a bit, but not too much.

I've got an old TD8K kit incorporated in my Tama kit & the sounds are very good - the mesh heads feel really good as well.

£200 is my absolute maximum. I'm already stretching it as it is. I can't find any 2nd hands one local, except the CB and 'Dragon' one.

I would go with the CB as I said, what do you think? Would it be decent enough for at home?

Well for a starter kit I'd say they would be fine - but I still think you could get better if you went for a second hand shell pack & looked around for cymbals/hardware.

Cheers. I'll order the CB tomorrow online. Can get it for £215 with delivery

Just remembered i was in York the other day and in an antiques shop, they had a 60's premier kit with all cymbals etc for £200

edit: also loads of decent kits, or beginners kits for tht price on a certain auction site, yamaha, and pearl being 2 of them

Most of them are collection only though and I don't have the transport to do that anyway.

I think I'm going to leave it. Drumming sounds like an expensive hobby, and as much as I really want to take it up again I just can't afford a decent kit and I don't want to risk spending £200 on a kit and it sounding like crap.

dont give up on it, you might have some serious hidden talent, dude get yourself the cb kit, to an untrained ear its fine for practicing on, i just practice on my legs now as i dont have a kit setup anywhere as im always out giggin, so as long as it makes a sound and you can produce a beat go for it.

I'll go with the CB then and hopefully go from there. Will be ordering tommorow!

Cheers

I dont see the point in throwing away an idea due to cash, yes its a cheaper kit, yes its not gonna be the best, but you can still learn on it, and if you decide its for you in the future you can always upgrade fella

My neighbours aren't going to be happy :D How well do the silencing pads work? I imagine it makes the drums sound really tinny

Very silly question, but I just remembered I'm left handed... Haha. And my old drum tutor used to teach me the left handed way so there's no way I could play right handed now, I don't need to change any of the kit up or anything? I assume it's all universal? Sorry for the stupid question.

I went into the Ryhthm House today - I bet you know that one DMPoole?

He sorted me with a CB kit for £150 with new heads and better than the default symbols.

Nice bloke!

Oggie, great drummer, great bloke.
He's the drummer with DEMON - http://the-demon.com/
I was going to suggest Rhythm House but I keep forgetting the name :)

can you get it home OK?

He kindly delivered it for me at 6colock. Saved me a lot of hassle! I'm very impressed with the kit, it may not be the best thing but to me is sounds fine. He gave me some brand new Staag hi-hats and crash aswell, better than the default ones anyway!

Now I just need to drop on a another tomtom as this kit only came with one. No big deal for the moment as I'm only learning still but I'm going to try and drop on one asap, any idea how much I could except to pay for a low end one?

I'm picking it up quite easy so far though, my 2 years of playing 5 years ago didn't really leave me. My timing is still good and I can put a few beats together. I also arranged lessons again which should be a big help!

Cheers

Really getting back into this now! Sucks I can only play a few beats though and I can only do 1-2 simple fills.

Any tips on how I'd go about learning new beats? I'm hoping when I take my lessons they'll help me with picking new beats up.

Looks like I need to replace my hi-hat clutch aswell so I ordered one today. The foot pedal on the hi hat stand sometimes goes all the way down, so it makes my top hi hat extend loads. It's just a hassle adjusting it a lot but from what I was reading online it sounds like it's the clutch that's a bit dodgy.
