Drummer - did we do right?

From what it seems his intentions were, I'm supprised he didn't leave himself. Mohinder summed up my thoughts very well.

We were in a kind of similar situation. Originally me and the singer formed the band and got in a bassist and dummer by advertising at the university. Everything was fine until the drummer graduated and moved back to london. He started to miss a lot of practices with very short notice (although it was kind of understandable as he was having to travel almost 2 hours to get there). One day, he told us he couldn't make a gig that we had in about a weeks time, but managed to get to get us a replacement drummer that was local to us.

Our new drummer managed to learn our entire set in 2 x 3 hour practices and played to a much better standard than our old one. After this we talked to the old one about his commitment and we all decided it was best if he left and we got in the new one.

The drummers here will probably kill me, but I was totally blown away with the difference it made to our sound as I always considered the drummer the least important band member. We are so much tighter, confident and we get a lot more gigs than we used to.

So my advice would be if the new guy is better, and your not on great terms with the old drummer, the choice is pretty clear.

Good luck!

That is one tip for all group members.
If a drummer is crap then the rest of the band is crap.
All through my 35 years of gigging I've been very lucky to have had good drummers behind me.

A band is nothing without someone to keep the pace steady, whether that is a rhythm guitar, bass or drums.

dmpoole - you did the right thing. He obviously isn't really interested in the band so would have just continued to waste your time.

It's not half a pain having to lug their kits round everywhere though :(

The Dream Theater guy? With an idol like Mike Portnoy, all of us DT-fan drummers are superb drummers ;)

Impressed, you remember that from another thread :)
Funnily enough I've been watching the Images And Words DVD today.

Don't worry about it dude, it comes across as he really wasn't prepared to put the effort in to your band, so it's really not a loss. Especially since you have a great new drummer now, it's probably a blessing in disguise.

I think you definitely did the right thing, sounds like everyone is now in their "rightful" place.

We find that it's fairly easy to find a replacement drummer, but nigh on impossible to find a good one.. it's definitely a real talent to sound good rather than just having a big kit and thumping madly. In a previous band we needed to find a replacement drummer asap, and a 17yr old kid turned up with his dad's Gretch jazz kit and sat down to play. We looked at each other with a distinctly dubious look on our faces, which quickly turned to surprise when he started playing - he was a real monster and kicked hell out of our previous drummer. Needless to say he was hired on the spot :)

The stupid thing about this thread is that I'm acting as though I'm in my first band with my first drummer problem and as most of you know this is my 36th year of gigging. I just don't need this crap at my age.

possibly the worst web site i have ever seen lol. my eyes!

ego's in bands are never a good thing, sod it, you'll be better off without him.

Exactly. That website is shocking and it sounds like you've found a better drummer that you are comfortable with. All good in my books. :)

So has Tim really played alongside Def Leppard, Magnum and FM? Or does he mean play along with on cd? :p
