Drummers! Get in here!

I've had this Mapex kit for a few years now. Unfortunately its at my parent's house and I'm still in my first year at Uni so won't be moving it out for a while. I'm looking to get an electric kit so that I can bring it into my flat next year (headphones = happy neighbors).

Are you using your right foot to control one of your hi-hats? Why not use your left foot for both? (Sorry being nosey :p).

I mostly practice on desks or my lap nowadays. Got a kit in a studio but I very rarely manage to get in front of it.

I played for a year before I got a tutor, but that only lasted about 4 - 6 months as I broke my wrist and needed to wait for it to heal. Now it's fully healed, I haven't gone back to my tutor, I think I'll just keep playing on my own for a bit.

I do recommend getting a few lessons though, having someone teach you the basic rudiments is a good start :)

My Roland kit sits in the corner, gathering dust :( I long for teh winnar acoustic drumz. Soundproofing would be the way to go for me I thinks.

I don't really get to practice that much on my own, it's always with bands. But that's pretty much at least once a week anyway. We have a nice big church to practice in so it's the full fat kit every time :D I'm mostly self taught as well, just picked up things over the years.

Ah that's good to hear :)

Also just wondering, got my key the other day - is it normal for a crashing sound when tuning? Just a bit weird because I didn't think they cracked after they had been fitted and sat.

If you don't know how to tune properly then find somebody who does.
I have an ex drummer who turned up about 4 years ago and asked our current drummer if the could tune the kit and the difference was awesome.
About 6 months further on he asked again and once again they sounded awesome so I ordered our drummer to go and get drum tuning lessons off him and the ex drummer was happy to pass his knowledge on for free.

Hm... Don't know many people who might know. Maybe my uncle, he's played the drums for decades! I'll ask him when he's back from sea.

I used to have an electric kit, Roland 6DV when I was single and had my own gaff to practice in but to get the best out of them in gigs you need a good PA.

I sold them about 3 years ago and bought a Ludwig Accent CS custom when I joined a 3 piece rock blues band. I love the kit but I'm thinking of downsizing.

Sometimes the heads do make the cracking sound when tuning, especially on the snare due to the higher tension. It's nothing to worry about but if you are concerned, then just take the head off and check it just in case

My son uses a mapex kit, with sabian cymbals (I think). bought the kit for him on his 14th birthday and hes added to and improved it since. Hes now 17, has tutoring, has passed the rock school exams with distinction and now plays in a band called "Devolver" ( the uk based one not the American one). The singer sounds like hes got his throat caught in a drain (progressive death metal I think is what they play.)
He practices at least an hour a day, not after 20:00 as I reckon its only fair to the neighbours , has now started playing lots of gigs, doesn't get paid at all and I've had to run the band around a few times 'cos all the other parents aren't interested.

Hm... need to clean the grime off of my hi-hats and ride :(

Are there any good ways to clean them without using proper cymbal cleaner stuff?

There is a lot of contention and different opinion around what people use to polish their cymbals. I personally use a proper cymbal cleaner called Crazy Johns Cymbal Cleaner but only do it once every few years. It takes a lot of hard work but the results are astounding and take the cymbals pretty-much back to their original shine.

This is a picture of the cymbals with an old drum kit I used to play. I had played one session with the cymbals (after polishing) before taking the picture.
