Evening all...

As above really. I'm about to start downstairs on my house renovation and was having a chat with the OH about buying another pallet of plasterboard or having a plasterer render and skim the lot.

I did speak with our plasterer but he says 'it's up to you really' and didn't really know how the cost would compare but thinks they'll be similar...

So what you you recommend? Dot n dab 12.5mm SE boards and skim or have the plasterer render and skim it?

Any experiences on how the cost will compare? Obviously I'll have the labor charge of the render to factor in where as I'll do the boarding if we go that route...

Thanks :)

Dot & dab and skim every time. If nothing else, there's a hell of a lot less water to come out before you can do anything with the plaster.

Dot n dab any day IMO.
Measure up the rooms, price the pasteboard and adhesive.
Ask the plasterer for a price on skimming the boards. And ask if he's supplying the bags of dust. Of course you can supply it yourself.

unless it is a timber frame or single block with timber frame I would go with scratch coat and skim (render is outside), much more durable in the long term.

Take some quotes, you might find there isn't much in it. Labour costs are lower with the plasterboard method, but material costs are higher.

Sorry. Just saying some people like older plastering styles rather than plasterboard in older houses
