Got a DS3 E6300 and 2 gig Crucial Anniversary Ram.

Should there be an led on the board when power is connected?

When connected Hard drives spin up then the Cpu fan kicks in for about 2 seconds then stops. Any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks

Go into the BIOS and set the fan to PWM, that way it will spin all the time, on my DS4 when i switch on the onboard LED just flashes once then goes off.

Let me guess. The rig starts to boot, then after a few seconds turns itself off. A short pause and then it tries again. This cycle continues until the power is turned off at the mains/hardware switch?

I had this problem with a DS4 board. I have just RMA'd it.

I think I had this on the first boot of a new DS3 system. I cycled the power a couple of times and hit the reset switch once or twice.

I think the very first boot detects and writes the initial CMOS settings.

Ah, this kind of makes more sense now. I had a shorter power up time for the first two cycles and then each cycle was longer after that. I've head of problems flashing bios before, perhaps that is what has happened. I.e. a faulty bios chip that can't be flashed properly at initialisation or later manually. Would also mean that it would be very hard to pick up at the factory! It's a bit circumstantial I admit!
