DS Browser

So how long is the lag? Could you roughly time how long your a thread takes to render or something like that? I find it hard to believe that CNET takes 3 minutes to load, my mobile phone is quicker than that.

Shame there's no flash support, Youtube DS would have been sweet.
But I wonder if the DS is powerful enough for flash. Many flash animations are very processor intensive. Not sure the DS has enough umph for it.

It probably would be pushing it. The DS has only an ARM9 cpu @ 66MHz and an ARM7 @ 33MHz. (and the Wifi speed is capped at 2Mbps although that is 256Kbytes a second so shouldn't really be any problem.)

(Just as a handheld comparison - the PSP has a 333MHz MIPs processor)

I'm still in two minds about getting the browser myself... not sure how much use I would get out of it - although for web based email it would really be handy!

The lag only seems to be when a page loading, and you click on a link. bbc.co.uk on full graphics takes around 30 secs to fully load. Low Graphics mode takes about 3 seconds to fully load

The browser does not have "flash".
Yeah I know. I was just saying that the reason for not including it is that the DS probably won't be powerful enough.

Thats quite pants and i dont really buy that much, the PSP runs flash, although its an old version, still makes some flash content and flash games available.

I wouldnt get it as i dont use the web browser anywhere near often enough (well in fact i rarely use it) so dont see the point. I can understand if you are someone who is out a lot near wi-fi points a lot, sitting at uni waiting for the next lecture tho.

The PSP has a lot more horsepower though ... 333MHz MIPs processor, versus the 66MHz ARM9 + 33MHz ARM7 in the DS.

So does it run MSN messenger or another messenger compatible with a passport account?

No it doesn't run messenger.

Bought a DS Lite + Opera browser from Toys R Us today and got a couple of games thrown in free. Games were King Kong and a shoot'em up called Nanostray.

The DS lite happily connected to my Netgear Powermax router once I changed to wep encryption (unfortunately no wpa-dsk security :( ) > Started browsing, some pages do download quicker, high graphics sites such as CNN.com can be a bit slow to load, 45secs+ for full page content.
Opera seems a decent browser and handles favourites pretty well, can access mail2web for on the go email.

I just need a browser for use with hotspots in the UK and abroad to keep upto date with news and emails. Looked at PDAs but cost was more and had too many features that I wouldn't use.

Anyone know what size the expansion ram pack is that comes free with the browser?

Ps got the Black DS lite and it doesn't half show fingerprint marks well!!

tried using Ebuddy msn classic version. It works in as much as that I can login, see contacts and can send messages that get through. But I cannot get any messages back from the other caller, it comes up with a 'pop-up' blocker is in operation. Probably some kind of software in the browser from astaro software company for added security and safer browsing.

Could be a chance of getting a fully working msn on Opera browser.

I thought it was opera that made the DS browser?
or is this just a different version they have released just now? i was wondering why i didnt see the big O on the box on the gameplay site.

Have you tried

msn2go.com
e-messenger.net
iloveim.com
meebo.com

If one of these works I may purchase it :p

Tried them all:

msn2go gives error message of unsupported browser.
E-messenger.net is the same as e-buddy and stil doesn't work.
iloveim.com complains that I have a pop-up blocker in operation and asks me to turn it off. Still cannot find any advanced controls to turn off the pop up blocker
Meebo.com also fails because the browser is unsupported.

Now that the browser is being bought by more people and it's user base will increase, then hopefully some will write am IM that will be supported by DS browser.
