Just wandering if anyone knows of people cheating during online play?

Tonight i logged in and looked for an international game, found 3 others quite quickly. One hadnt played at games at all, one had more losses than wins which seems the usual and one had 5 loses to 30+ wins.

Fair enough, race map chosen and off we go. I get a great start and im into 1st. Then this character shoots past me, i come 3rd and he wins. One player quits, leaving 3 to race the next map. It loads, again this character flies ahead of the pack and wins. The other player quits leaving just me and this lad.

Map starts, i get a good start and leave him standing, however he then comes flying past me. He seems to be jumping constantly from one side of the track to the other, moving a lot faster than he should be able to. seemed to spend the majority of his time bouncing around. I dont mind losing in a fair game but that there was something fishy about this.

So, does anyone know if people have figured out how to cheat, and if so, how can you spot them? Is there anyway to ban people from joining your games?

sounds like snaking.. i dont know much about this is mk but you can do it in games such as f zero gx and previous mk's (i think).

take from wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Kart_DS

"Snaking

The execution of several consecutive mini-turbos during races has caused minor controversy in Wi-Fi play in the form of snaking -- players who drift their karts back and forth across a straight stretch to generate repeated mini-Turbos (a movement likened to actual snakes). Because this gives the user a distinct speed advantage over other, "non-snaking" opponents, players regard snaking as anything from legitimate and advanced racing strategy, to an unfair tactic, or even outright cheating. Some players have attempted to form leagues (or "Friends" groups) composed of avowed “non-snakers”, but the distinction between a "snaker" and "non-snaker" is vague, largely depending on whether the player uses Mini-Turbos on straight areas of the track or on curves."

i personally dont see it as cheating, but some people frown on it

I reckon it's cheating til you can do it!! Once you're snaking all over the track i bet you see it as valid!!

Remember the hacked SFII machines where a dragon punch would generate 10's of fireballs too? Everyone was quick to shout down those who chose Ken and pulled off one dragon to finish the round, but once two of you who could do it got on there, and ecah dragon countered the other, it became a sport again. Whether it is cheating or not is relative to whether you can do it or not.

I say if it's not a hack and you can do it without any adjustments, then it's part of the game and you should crack on with it.

hmm snaking?

well its part of the game, i.e its programmed into the game to let you powerboost, so whats to stop you powerboosting all the time?

whats with the un-natural state of lateral movement to increase speed anyway? it kinda makes the game suck for anyone who just wants a race with other people with a similar level of ability.

does it make the game fun? not at all. DS games are primarily aimed at casual gamers etc, who arent as likely to spend the time learning how to snake.

I get this too, but one thing is that they are not snaking. They tend to appear on one side, then the other way too quickly.

the easiest way to sort it would have been to remove "sliding powerboost" from mario kart.

it doesnt make sense, it wasnt needed in the original, and it is patently open to abuse.

i agree, sliding so you don't lose speed in corners is one thing, boosting constantly is another. Plus its a lot of work to do it constantly.

Probably snaking as has already been said. It's a completely valid tactic and isn't cheating.

/waits for Kreeeee

Yeah, it takes out lots of fun in Mario Kart online and I stopped playing it as well! :(

Yeap me 2, ruined the whole experience for me.
I didn't get into the whole single player thing aswell, don't know why just didn't seem to love it as much as everyone else does.

Mark me down for the snaking is cheating camp I also stopped playing it when you got someone with like 49999 wins and 2 defeats connecting who then proceded to dart from one side of the track to the other (you know who these annoying **** are when they choose the egg kart at the beginning) and thrash you even if you use blue shells boosts and every other weapon on them.

Ok it's in the game but essentially mario kart is a fun non serious karting game it's all about weapon tactics for me not using some cheating boost to go round quicker than people. It's nintendos fault for putting it in, any future sequels should have it removed or the option to disable it in multiplayer.

snaking isnt even remotely close cheating...

i can certainly understand from a casual gamers point of view with wanting to race with a similar skilled player who doesnt snake but other than that... or if it was some sort of game breaking glitch

the way i see it, its in the game and yea its unconventional and almost certainly not the devlopers intention for power boosting to be used for snaking. But the thing is, its available for all players to use so whats the problem? Where there is competitive gaming involved, theres gonna be people who figure out stuff like this to give them the edge, it happens in all games where multiplayer is involved and definitely if online play is involved.

things like make a game more interesting and unique imo! :D as chris[beans] said, if it's not a hack and you can do it without any adjustments, then it's part of the game and you should crack on with it.

Roll on to Diddy Kong Racing DS!

I just decided to find out about when it'll come out and here it is!

Nintendo has released its schedule of DS titles for Europe for the rest of 2006 and the first quarter of 2007.

Pre-Christmas titles are Sudoku Master on October 27, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team on November 10, Tenchu Dark Secret on November 24, and Yoshi's Island DS on December 1.

Titles coming early in the new year are Star Fox Command and Actionloop, both to be released on January 26.

The undated first-quarter releases are Square Enix's Children of Mana, Harvest Moon DS, Mario Slam Basketball, Diddy Kong Racing DS, Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, Pokémon Ranger, Magic Starsign (working title), and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Justice for All.

And guess which developer is working on Diddy Kong Racer? Microsoft's Rare!

So is spawn killing part of the game mechanics. I dont like that much either. Hopefully in the next kart version they will remove the ability atleast it would make it something like a racing game.

haha spawn killing.. not something i like either. but again, open to both players and if someone is good enough to make it past waves of enemy players and get to their spawn point alive then you know what? good on them. you can do it too.

are rocket jumps bad? should rockets be removed from quake? what about dodge jump in ut because people used that to move faster instead of just dodging? did you know combos in the original street fighter 2 were unintentional?
