My NAS (DS411j) is now full to the brim and doing my head in by how slow it is.

It is used for serving videos and music to kodi and backups for my PC.

This is not going to be upgraded again for another 5 years probably.

What should I buy?

I'm also looking for another Synology 4 bay NAS to sit alongside my DS412+. Synology are about to release the quad core 4k optomised DS916+ and cheaper DS416play in the next month apparantly.

The DS916+ is going to be priced around £450 so pushing my price limit so I will probably go for the DS416play.

I personally wouldn't go with drives larger than 3TB also. If one of them was to fail then you've got 2TB more data to restripe in raid which may result in more errors.

I hadn't heard about that DX513 expansion enclosure. If im stuck with only 4 bays I need to go larger that 3TB drives really.

Does SHR work with the DS916+ and DX513? Thinking I could keep my current drives and add a couple of extra 2TB drives quite cheap for now then larger as prices drop or they come up second hand.
