DSL cables and filters

Ok, so I'm getting frequent disconnects and believe it has something to do with an old DSL cable I have which the dog chewed (I know right). Will any DSL (RJ11) do or does it have to be a specific one? Also, my router is connected to an extension which doesn't have a phone on it, so does this mean I don't need a filter on this? Or does the extension need to be on every extension regardless?

Please ask if I'm being vague or unclear :)

Another thing, I've been reading about these "I-Plates" which can reduce interference. Does that mean it will improve extensions too? Or just the master socket?

Yes I do, haven't seen much about the adslnation one, but have heard their products are good. I'm talking about the I-Plate, which follows the same principles I believe. My question is that is it only the master socket that gets affected by these faceplates? Or do all extensions in the house get similar/the same effect?
