DSL cables and filters

Ok, so I'm getting frequent disconnects and believe it has something to do with an old DSL cable I have which the dog chewed (I know right). Will any DSL (RJ11) do or does it have to be a specific one? Also, my router is connected to an extension which doesn't have a phone on it, so does this mean I don't need a filter on this? Or does the extension need to be on every extension regardless?

Please ask if I'm being vague or unclear :)

Any cable that looks the same should work. It just needs to connect the centre pair of contacts.

The filter just removes the adsl signal from the voice circuit, so in theory you don’t need a filter at the socket if only the router is connected.

filters also filter out different frequency's which is why the ADSL Nation stuff always comes recommended as it quite often boosts sync speeds...

If the router is the only thing on the entire phone line (not just the extension socket) then you do not need a filter, however if the router is on the extension and a phone is on another socket then both need filters on.

They don't because the adsl side of things goes through unfiltered. The filtering is there to stop the adsl influencing the phone, and the phone from influencing the adsl.

If you plug a line filter in that only has a modem/router plugged into it then it will be doing absolutely nothing as all the filtering applies to phone side.

Every phone (or similar device) that's plugged in does need a line filter.

Another thing, I've been reading about these "I-Plates" which can reduce interference. Does that mean it will improve extensions too? Or just the master socket?

Have you an NTE5 socket ie the one that splits in half with the bottom half unscrewing? If you do, I'd recommend the adsl nation plate/filter replacement. You can attach extensions already filtered with that, but the downside is it costs about £15

Yes I do, haven't seen much about the adslnation one, but have heard their products are good. I'm talking about the I-Plate, which follows the same principles I believe. My question is that is it only the master socket that gets affected by these faceplates? Or do all extensions in the house get similar/the same effect?

the i-plate still needs a filter, thwe adsl nation one removes the need for an external filter because you can choose to filter extensions if you want...
