Can anyone recommend me a good book for somebody whos never used a DSLR camera before.

Something that goes through the basics, explaining thing like appiture, exposure, Focal Lenght, ISO, ect ect Iinformation on taking low light shots at night would be nice too.

Had a quick flick through "Mastering Your Digital SLR: How to Get the Most Out of Your Digital Camera" by Chris Weston In the bookshop earlier which looked good.

Cheers,

Neil

Not read it myself, but everyone seems to recommend; Understanding exposure by Bryan F. Peterson. Worth a look. :)
It is a very good book, my copy is the original pressing but I believe the current ones have been updated to include some digital specifics.

That said what he talks about in the main is relevant to both film and digital and is well illustrated with the accompanying photos.

i have the understanding exposure and cant recommend it enough - if taught me a lot of the basics in a very short period of time and is always good to experiment with the different types of shots he explains in the book.

I have
The Digital Pohotgraphy Book by Scott Kelby

It's pretty good, focuses on Nikons and Canons and is written in a pretty laid back and informal manner, i like it.

I wouldn't buy a book to learn. That being said, I'm more of a hands on person and learn by mistakes along with reading.

My way of doing it is trial and error after reading up on specific things on the net. When you get that aspect of it right, go and try reading up on something else on the net and try it out in the field.

Experience is the best way of learning, especially with photography. A lot of what you read won't make any sense unless you're trying it :)

The Digital Photography Handbook by Doug Harman and David Jones - Really good when I was starting out, explains everything really well so everyone can understand. Think there's a new updated edition now.
The Collins Complete Photography Manual - Got this for christmas, It's a massive book, makes a really good reference guide, to look up specific subjects.

I also have understanding exposure, but i havent read it yet :)

I forgot to add that there are some good books to read, but not necessarily learn a great deal from. I've got three Ansel Adams books which are quite interesting, and then there's the Photoshop CS3 for digital photography book, which is handy if you've got a terrible memory like me if you don't use something every day :D

The other thing I'd recommend would be a subscription to Digital photography magazine. You even get a free bag/tripod/monopod (what ever the offer is that month!) when you sign up. Also Amateur photographer is a handy mag for news and some tips. For sheer indulgence Professional photographer magazine is good too :)
