A couple of days ago one of these monitor kits appeared in my local shop for a reasonable price, £107 to be exact.

I understand that these are very useful for shooting video and those who employ DSLR's to shoot video use them. I don't want it for that, I want something for reviewing RAW files of photos I've just taken. You see, I have a problem with the tiny screen on the back of my Nikon D7100, half the time I just can't see it properly, even with my glasses on! I tend to use it to check sharpness and that's about it.

I had thought of using an old laptop to tether my camera but although that may be practical in the studio (I have a very small and very modest home studio), it just wouldn't work when I'm out and about.

I shoot an awful lot of OCF outdoors, often in bright sunlight and the ability to review an image to help balance the flash versus the ambient (or shooting HSS, whatever the case may be), would be greatly assisted if I had a decent image to review. I've also been known to mess about with ND filters and long exposures, something I think it would be very useful for reviewing.

So, I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to buy one of those Smallrig type "meccano" sets for my D7100 so I can mount my trigger on the hotshoe as normal and mount the monitor on top of that. I should mention that I shoot mostly off a tripod whenever possible (in the studio and outside), it's not like I would be hand holding this!

Daft idea? Is there a better solution about? Will it actually do what I want it to? i.e. review photos? Would love to hear peoples thoughts.

I've wondered about a monitor in the past and recently too.
In the past I tried connecting a tablet to my camera and mounting it on the hot shoe mount and tripod
I quickly found out it was more hassle than it was worth.
It's another piece of equipment to carry around and setup.
But I gave it up as a bad job.

The Aputure monitor and the rest of their products have a good reputation. At that price it might be worth having a go.
Alternatively I'd try out one from Amazon, you have 30 days to test out the concept.

I found this YT video and channel useful when looking for monitors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta-9zY23KaE

This is definitely a concern of mine as well! It was one of the reasons why I have ruled out a laptop. It's also what made me think of the "cage" idea although I'll freely admit that I probably need to think that through a little more as well. I've actually been looking at a double hotshoe adapter like this:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Andoer-Spe...25&sr=1-1&keywords=nikon+d7100+double+hotshoe I just worry as to whether it will break my hotshoe with the monitor on top it as well as the trigger. Not entirely convinced that's the way to go as the trigger needs the hotshoe whereas the monitor does not. Maybe I need one of those old fashioned flash holders which is compatible with Manfrotto's quick release (PL200) system, or something like this:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Universal-...6266547&sr=1-19&keywords=flash+holder+bracket

They might be useful or probably not.
If you search on this page for "Stoboflip" https://tiffen.com/stroboframe/
There's a poor quality video demonstrating it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6dPoI9QrGk
It basically a flash bracket that would allow you to mount a monitor. When your camera is in portrait orientation, you flip the monitor back to landscape orientation, so the monitor is always on top of your setup.
