DSLR Newbie (Nikon D3100 shots)

Me and the mrs have a little 10mp compact at the moment which is perfect for nights out but I am after something a little more meaty for shots when we are out and about....

Scenery shots whilst out with the dog
motorsport
holidays

A little bit varied and I'm guessing high ISO would be good for the motorsport? :)

Am leaning towards a D3100 and 16GB Class10 card unless someone tells me otherwise? :D

D3100 looks like the best new entry level camera there is spec wise. Hasn't had a load of in-depth reviews but plenty of people have used the camera and think it is amazing. The hgih-iSO performance is breathtaking for an entry level camera.

Some people might advice buying an older 2nd hand body like a D90. These have sturdier bodies and are slightly more pro, but to be honest the D31000 will take better pictures.

For the memory card, you don't necessarily need a very fast card. It is always better to have multiple smaller cards as well. I tend to have 1 smallish but very fast card and several large cheap slower cards. The fast card would be sued for sports, but TBH on the lower end camera models there is not a vast difference in my experience. But I don't shoot sports much.

Thanks - have looked at the D90 and D5000 but they look overkill and slightly big for me :D

Can get the D3100, 18-55 VR lens and 2 16GB cards for £560 - seems about the norm? :)

D3100 is an awesome beginner DSLR imo, chickened out here and got a D90 before it got released but, i hear it has awesome high ISO performance which is really nice, something a 'newbie' doesnt have to worry thinking about is always nice!

I have a couple of lowepro shoulder bags somewhere that are collecting dust, I think one is a NOVA 100AW, bag, will fit the camera with the kit lens nicely? If you are interested then I will sell via the "for sale" boards?

As for memory, I personally would never have a card as big as 16GB. Id rather have 4x4GB as you can store a hell of a lot of pics on a 16gig card and if it got damaged for whatever reason then you lose a lot of work! I prefer lots of smaller cards.

Just a thought?

First impressions -

Very nice size and weight.
Guide mode is v. useful for a newbie :D
Lightroom doesnt support NEF RAW from the 3100 :(
Video quality is v good and usable :D

One of my first shots - small bit of PP done on it :)

Lightroom will have the update shortly, I had the same issue with my 550D when I first got it.

**Edit

Just looked at the EXIF, ISO 3200!? Is your camera trolling me? :p

Yes please do, seriously considering taking this over a 40D, which sounds incredibly stupid, but that ISO performance is incredible.

Oh man, I really want of these D3100's now... If you stuck the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 lens on there you'd have an awesome setup for low light but even with the kit lens that shot look brilliant for ISO3200. :) That looks better than my D60 shots at ISO 800!

EDIT: Nikon's have an awesome auto-ISO feature when using the PASM modes, once you figure out how it works it's a godsend IMO. Look it up in the manual once you get board of using the auto mode. ;)
