Hi, I'm looking at buying my first SLR and have been having a look around, of all the bodies I like the D50 best, mainly because it feels nicer and is cheaper than the 350D!!

The problem I have is with lenses, I don't want to end up buying the kit
lens and it being rubbish so... would yourecommend buying body only then getting a couple of lenses separately or what? And what lenses would you recommend?

I'm mainly interested in Landscape type stuff and Macro work and am taking this to Cape Town, Sydney, New
Zealand and New York in a year or two so it needs to be up for that!

Thanks

Get the kit lens for the extra money it is a bargain see ken rockwell's site for a review if you decide on more expensive glass sell it on .
Purchased a d50 and kit lens in jan so far have brought a sigma 70 210 and a tokina 80 400 happy with both but can't justify spending more ( yet )

Depends what the "kit lens" on offer is, on the whole nikon kit lenses are far better than the canon offerings so thats a plus.

If you get the 18-70DX youll not be dissapointed, alternatively to that there is the 24-85 which is also cracking, both are sharp and fast using AF-S motors.

If you go non-nikon then a Sigma EX 24-70 F2.8 is probably a good bet (see MM!) and for wide stuff possibly the EX 12-24 which is also another cracking lens.

Its really budget dependant!

I was just about to post a new thread along these lines.

I'm in the market for a D50 (well, i've almost decided to get one) and i was wondering if every kit lens is the same, from any store?

The Kit Lens will likely vary between the 18-55 and the 18-70, the 18-55 probably being more common with the D50.

I just have bought a D50 with the 18-55mm lens however it hasn't arrived yet but I will post back feedback when it arrives.

Most D50 "kits" come with the 18-55 - the reviews aren't overly great compared to the 18-70 which is overall a much better lens.

18-55 review
18-70 review

If I had the budget, I'd definitely spend the extra to go for the 18-70 rather than 18-55 personally. Alternatively, spend a little more and the Nikon 18-200mm AF-S VR is supposed to be amazing for the focal range and money.

Yup the 18-200 VR is the best and sharpest super zoom available right now, well worth the extra if you want everything on one lens/

Thanks for the help everyone, the 18-200 VR looks very nice, but is a bit pricey at £500!! I'm thinking of getting the kit lens, a £200 Sigma 105mm Macro lens and a cheaper £100 Tamron 70-300mm, anyone got any better suggestions or does this look good?

I bought the D50 kit with the 18-55DX and the 55-200DX and I'm pretty impressed. Does everything I want it too for now.

I think I paid 563 quid for it last year.

I would get the Nikon 18-200mm VR, it might cost a little more but it's all the lens you will ever need.
The only problem I see is obtaining one, it is very popular and thus the waiting list is quite long.

Like SDK^ says, the 18-200, 27-250(35mm equiv) sounds perfect and with VR. If I had a N*kon I'd seriously consider this - brillant range, good quality, and you don't have to keep chaning lenses thus cleaning the sensor shouldn't be an issue.

I paid £500 for the 70-200 range alone (non IS)

I didn't realise the D50 body has come down quite so much in price... you can easily find body-only for £357 incl. delivery!

Then you are free to look for a good condition 2nd hand 18-70 which should be easy enough to find. Also possible to order new from Hong Kong for £180-190, so D50 + 18-70 only comes to around £540 or so. Much better deal than £450 for the D50 + 18-55 lens, in my opinion.

Or, as many have mentioned already, stretch a little bit more and get the 18-200mm AF-S VR Nikkor. People don't rave about AF-S for no reason, and it's especially useful on the longer focal ranges when other screw-driven lenses would be very slow.

Why do people star out the i in Nikon all the time? Damn C@non junkies! :p

I don't know what it is about Nikon but they do give you a True image compared to the Canon. I believe its down to how the image is percieved through the lense and not always the photographer. I bought the D70 when it first came out and have just purchased th D200. I get unbelievable reults in Dawn light, holding the camera with one hand and in full auto mode the only difference is I like a semi manual lense setting so I can get the perspective I want out of the camera lense. Why is the Nikon the camera for forensics? The picture has to tell no lies.
