Just purchased a DS214+ but I am having a few problems setting up ftp access for a created user group.

I create the user group but I get no option at all to add a password to the user group name so they can access the NAS via ftp.

Does anyone have any idea on how to give a user group a username and password?

Thanks

You don't set passwords on user groups, you sent passwords for individual users. Users are then added to groups to make setting permissions easier.

Hi Dusty

Can you help me out here please m8 because my head is going from one place to another.

All I want at the moment is to set the NAS up so I can use it as a backup service for a few forum members on my forum.

Looking at it I need to set up a mail server 1st so I can invite users to the NAS these are the parts where I am having all the problems.

Ps...I'll even give you the NAS details and let you do it all for me.

The funny thing is it was working last night, I tried it with the admin username and password 1st before I disabled the account and same problem there as well.

Looking in filezilla the actual ports are set higher to the ones that are set inside the NAS.

Have you setup a static ip for the nas then setup your router from "control Panel"?
Looks like it can't find the directory\user. You have setup all the basic stuff first haven't you?

As I also said you don't use "admin" as login, I did post the thread to follow.
Have you ever had a Nas or server?

Hi deuse

I let EZ-Intenet Wizard set it up for me but like you said it has no static IP. Though 2 days ago when I 1st tried everything I could access the NAS via ftp since then I have reinstalled DSM and since the new install I can't access it.

Think I need to do this inside the virginmedia SH under the DHCP Reservvation though doing it correctly is another matter.

I haven't used admin as log in m8 I created another user like you said.

This is the 1st time I've used a NAS and server before yes.

I have the VM SH2 and I use a version of synology. Have you turned on FTP?
When you setup the router it will find the VM one, then click apply. It may ask you to setup a static ip either let it do it or pick the IP you want.

I.E I have mine on 192.168.0.5 on my VM network. Go to shared folders and setup permissions for each user.
Test FTP, if all is ok then do the same for each user. If your going to let people on you don't know you will have to lock it down.

Think I have done it.

I had to run Ez-Internet again and since then I can access the files via ftp and with the admin account and a new user account.

Cheers guys hopefully it will stay this way.

The only other thing I have noticed every time I sign in to the diskstation via webman the LAN IP address keeps changing will this be an issue?

It certainly won't help matters. I think the EZ Internet thing on these establishes a dynamic DNS service, but I'm not sure if/how it handles port forwarding; I'd guess it's using UPNP. You should set up either an address reservation in your router (or whatever is servicing DHCP), or set up a static address for it.

If your router doesn't do reservations, you'll need to change the DHCP range. For example, if your router is on 192.168.1.1 the DHCP range will probably be 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254. If you change this to 192.168.1.20, then you can assign 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.19 as static addresses to your devices.
