This may not be strictly GPU section material but as its through the Nvidia control panel I'd like to think it is.

Anyways I'm having some fun playing one of my favourite games of all time,mirrors edge,and Ive got 4k forced through the NCP. It looks pretty enough through my Dell U2713HM 1400p monitor but is it a true 4k picture or am I missing the actual meaning of this?
 
Its not true 4K - it works by rendering the game at 4K and then trying to use that data to build an image of the scene at your native resolution preserving more detail than you normally get rendering directly at your native resolution but at the end of the day you still have the same number of pixels they just might be slightly different looking to try and give the impression of having more detail.

Generally it works fairly well - using 4K->1440p on my Swift along side a 28" 4K panel its not a million miles from the 4K panel but neither is it as good as having true 4K and as you go up to bigger screens the difference is much more apparent - alongside a big screen 4K TV its much more noticeable.

It's just supersampling made easy is all. You cannot 'make' or fake more pixels than your monitor physically has. Think of it as **** hot anti aliasing, that's all it is.

There's no substitute for real, native resolution.

VSR is based around supersampling techniques (and usually does a bit better job on edges), DSR works in a little bit more content aware fashion I'd say semi-intelligent but that kind of gives a more advanced impression than it really is. Unlike traditional downsampling that is fairly indiscriminate and will average some detail into oblivion DSR tries to preserve some of the detail that usually gets lost:

The first image is the pixels as rendered at 1920x second one if you were playing at 4K and the one on the right shows what happens at 1920x after enabling 4K DSR.

If you look at it closely there is still a fair step from DSR to the 4K image but from a moderate distance it has the perception of being more detailed than native res.

It looks better than 1400p just wondering how close it actually is to a 4k picture. Ive been thinking on a 4k screen for a while now but I think I might just go 1400p/Gsync/144hz instead

4k is *extremely* punishing on the graphics system m8, I'd advise against it personally (this is from someone who has had one!!)

I'm finding one Ti is killing 1440p, and the thought of a 1440p 144Hz Gsync panel is very very tempting indeed :D :cool:
