I have to sort out a complete new home network to incorperate the use of a laptop in a building some 30 yds away from the main house.
My exisiting setup using a Netgear DG834N does not provide a good stable connection over that distance.
Has anyone experience of using Dual band, would it give me that extra range?
Are there any adapters that would allow a latop or desktop to connect to a dual band router?

Or am I lokking in the wrong direction to solve the problem

Wireless n has the greatest range but speeds drop as you move away from the AP. In theory a good wireless n AP would be able to cover that distance but in my experience the speeds are usually unacceptable. If I was in your shoes I would be looking to run a cable to the new location.

I was hoping that wouldn't be suggested as I had looked at the option and it is a nightmare, the whole run is solid concrete and to try to run a cable overhead is not a good thought either.

Try a set of 200Mb powerline connectors, if performance isn't good enough you can always return them under DSR. Worth a try if cabling is out of the question as the next step up is setting up a point to point wireless link with external antennas.

Powerline... thank you, why didn't I think of that one... Job done as I know they will work over that distance, especialy with the new wiring already in place.
