Dual booting

gareth only got sp1, will have to download sp2

Marc, does this always happen with HDD's over 130GB? Ive not install win many times.

Can I create 3 partions in the win setup, I think you only have the option to create 1?

sp1 should have seen your whole drive

yes. but you could create yourself a new xp disk with sp2 integrated if you like. you just need your original xp cd, the full sp2 download, a blank cd and a cd-writer. :)
... and that's the recommended method, rather than applying a service pack after install.

You are much better off slipstreaming sp2 into the install disk before installing - rather than risking a chance of patching up to a service pack and knackering your install... (you can also add those sata drivers to the install cd so you don't need a floppy)

linky on how to

Installed xp with 8GB, iam thinking that I should have allowed for 10GB as with a few programs it will soon fill up :( silly me. Will allow 25GB when I install vista for vista and programs.

Not too sure what firewall and anti virus to use, on my other pc and laptop I use zonealarm and avast. On the sticky MKS-Vir is best for anti virus. Should I just stick to avast and za?

One odd thing I have noticed is that I just plugged in a cat five cable into this new build and into my router and the internet worked straight away I didnt have to change any settings or keys etc, not sure why

Installed all the chipset drivers and direct x 9, all off the mobo cd. Havent installed the gfx drivers as I didnt get a cd with it. Not had any BSOD or any problems, it all seem to have gone 'too' well. Iam happy though, thanks for all the help :D

I have given XP Pro a 10GB partition, and Vista 64bit a 20GB part, when installing Vista, I had a partition of 15GB, and it said it needed at least 17, so simply enlarged it too 20GB to avoid any problems. :)

Thanks for that, could you answer a few questions for me please?

When I install programs e.g excell if I want to use excell in both xp and vista for some reason will I have to install excell onto both xp and vista os? What about anti-virus and firewalls aswell?

Will I have to install all off the drivers etc for both os?

Do you think 8Gb is too small for xp, ive got just over 4Gb left on the C drive? Iam planning to use vista most off the time the reason why iam installing both os is that ive read a few people views on vista saying this doesnt work with that etc. So I will use xp in that instance. Therefore I was going to install pretty much all programs on my vista partition and make it 30Gb.

If someone could clear up these points for me that will be great.

you have install all apps twice, once per operating system. this is because each OS has it's own registry (a kind of database for application settings) which cannot be shared. :)

Thanks for clearing that up. Do you think the 8Gb will be enough for xp will apps ?

What about drivers, do I have to set all off them up twice?

What anti-virus and firewall can you recomend for xp and vista?

For XP, NOD32/Kaspersky (paid for) AV. Avast/AVG/AntiVir/AOL Kasperky rebranded (free) AV.

ZoneAlarms Pro/Sunbelt Kerio (paid for) FW. Zone Alarms/Sunbelt Kerio/Comodo (free) FW.

They're the most common paid for and free antivirus/firewalls for XP.

what apps u installing?

I was going to install office, ps, nero, wmp classic, other which I can't think off at the mo on vista partition, and then games on xp as iam guessing the games will work better on xp.

I was going to have all my data, video's, mp3's pictures etc on the third partition , and create a fourth for maybe ubuntu. Can you access the data for either os?

Cheers, am I right in thinking most games will play better in xp? From what ive said do you think having 8Gb will be enough space?

i don't have problems playing games in vista.. but some people say they do.. some old games won't play good on vista, so yes thoses would run better in xp..

is your graphic card ati or NVIDIA?

8gb is enough if u don't install lots of games..

Are wicked, I was going to go for a GTS but didnt have enough money at the mo. What games are you playing?

I wont to install the drivers for the card vsoon, can you send me the link to which ones I need please?

get the latest drivers from the ati site. :p

i must admit i haven't got any new games. :o

only games i have installed at the moment are gta san andreas, pro evo 6 and flatout2. other games i've installed previously and work ok are hl2, hl2:ep1 and quake4. search the forums, there are plenty of people playing much newer games with vista ok.
