dual channel question?

How much of a boost will you get from running memory in dual channel?
I ask this because i currently have 3x512mb ddr400 sticks, two of them geil matched pair, the other an ocz stick with the same timings. It seems to run without and much if any difference in performance but games such as bf2 run better due to it not running out of ram. The only intensive apps i really use are games.
Should I revert back to two sticks and try lower the memory usage or use all three in single channel?

In theory it gives you twice the bandwidth.

But if you're getting better results by having the third stick then leave it as it is.
