As I have no experience in dual cpus/dual core cpus, id like to know a litle something from you guys that run dual setups. First of all is the dual core same as dual cpu? Does it only give you an advantage in specific applications (say, 3d studio max?) or can windows use both of them for whatever you are doing? For example, say I am unzipping a big archive, i.e. 1gig one, with my 3200xp it will really slow down my computer, everything will take forever to respond, etc. If I am running a dual core rig, will it use one core to unrar, and the other core for me to use with msn, firefox etc?

Ta! :)

No dual core is not the same as dual CPU, a while ago dual CPU's were released on slot 1 but that failed. They're also common for servers where you have several physical CPU and HSF's. Dual Core like the AMD X2 have two CPU's on the same silicon and chip. Windows will see two CPU's so any Windows program should use both, I was DVD shrinking about each CPU was around 60%. I ran CPU Load and both at 100%
So you should be able to run anti-virus scan whilst encoding a DVD. Wheras that would slow down the single cored machine to a snails pace.

I'm doing weekly check, at the same time..

Scanning in Spybot.
Scanning in Ad-aware.
Scanning hard drives in AVG.

And it's not slowing down one bit! My laptop is basically unusable during spybot, no way can do three things at once and for the system still be usable.

Duel is damn good if your a multi-tasker!! i can encode huge video files in Adobe premiere and still play games without slow down. if you want to be able to do more than one thing at once get a Duel Core.

Awsome, that's the sort of answers I was waiting for :D So, any way I can built a second hand dual core rig for less than 250? :o I have an x800 but that's AGP, I am guessing all new mobos that support dual core run only pci-e? Also I have two 512ddr ram, if I could use these on a dual core mobo then I am guessing all I need is the cpu and the mobo. Any suggestions?

p.s. I won't be getting anythng till August so it can wait, I was just wondering because unziping is killing me :p

no offence mate, but those 3 are mainly hdd work.... so i dont think you would notice much with single core, the reason your lappy is slow is cos most of them have pants hdd's in and i doubt your lappy has 2gb of ram too. ;)

do those whilst playing a game and encoding a movie and you will see what dual core is about :D

nope i dont have dual core yet either :( i simply dont do enough to justify the high price of a decent one.

Asus P5VD1-X, use your current ram and graphics, Pentium D 805 and a decent PSU. Comes to ~£200, afaik other than an asrock thats the only board that supports dual core and AGP.

If you already have a good PSU, then get the Asrock 939 Dual thingy :p and an x2 3800+

Sounds like a plan, how much can I oc the 3800? 4500 maybe? I am running a 2600@3200 now so I'd like to get something that clocks well :D

The inital check looks through registry and is very CPU intensive, at least on the P4 Mobile (max power saving) anyway the point with dual core is that it's quicker for all things. So with dual core you can now have notepad whilst playing solitaire! :D

Well the asrock doesnt have great OCing features but 2.4 - 2.5 (4800+ speeds) should be fairly easy to get, although it has less cache than the 4800+ which will make it a tiny bit slower in some things.

On the other hand I don't want to spend a fortune on a new set of gfx and ram, so I'd want to go for a mobo that does have agp. Also my psu is around 400watts so I guess it's ok?

The asrock supports DDR and AGP/PCI-e so no problem there, what spec/brand is the PSU?
