Dual Core Optimisation Utility

Waiting on my dual core to arrive, what's the general consensus on this then?

Worth installing?

DO NOT INSTALL THE DUAL CORE OPTIMIZER!

Install the hot fixes and the AMD dual core driver..but not the optimizer!

Here's some instructions for you all:

1 - Install the amd drivers

2 - Download the hotfix. Download here http://www.amdzone.com/files/WinXPdualcorehotfix.exe

3 - Edit your registry to enable the HOTFIX, follow these steps.
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Right-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, point to New, and then click Key.
3. Type Throttle for the new key name.
4. Right-click Throttle, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
5. Type PerfEnablePackageIdle for the value name.
6. Right-click PerfEnablePackageIdle, and then click Modify.
7. In the Edit DWORD Value box, type 1. In the Value data box, make sure that Hexadecimal is selected, and then click OK.
8. Quit Registry Editor.

4 - Make sure your BOOT.ini has this command in it, /usepmtimer to check, right click on My Computer go to properties, click on the ADVANCE tab, then under startup and recovery click on settings, then click on EDIT....

5 - Install the NEW AMD Dual Core Optimizer.

Your Boot.ini should look something like this now:

Finally your done!

Ok, here is a simple way to reverse the drivers:

1 - Uninstall the Hotfix, go into ad/remove programs, click on show updates and remove update numbered KB896256

2 - Reverse the registry entry.

3 - Uninstall the AMD drivers.

4 - Uninstall the AMD Dual Core Optimizer.

5 - Done.

I only installed the AMD optimizer and I didn't notice a great deal of difference either way tbh.

Sorted -

Running the Dual Core Optimizer Setup.exe command again will Uninstall the software.

Those with KB896256 should follow DJKahunas instructions.

yup im having problems and am confused to ! i dont have the hotfix installed but do have the driver and optimizer intsalled - pc is having problems running... do i un install the optimizer then add the hotfix ? then re install the optimizer ???

It's a revised procedure but personally I wouldn't bother with it.


After all, the appliication will only otimize the dual core if it's been coded specifically to use them.

Don't install the Hotfix, and Don't intall the optimizer. Only install the AMD driver. If you want to uninstall the optimizer, then run the setup command again and it will uninstall.

Reports of Blue Screen crash when used with MS Hotfix from KB Article 896256.

Must be unrelated. Uninstall the optimizer anyway, then see if you get the same error.

Have you checked in the Device Manager (ControlPanel/System/Hardware) whether your USB run without conflicts? You might need to re-install the USB drivers. You could also check the BIOS.

Ref: Hotfix.
I personally have not installed it and as Huddy says you could also uninstall the optimizer. See what happens. My gut feeling is that the USB is a different story and is not related to the DualCore installation.

i think your right - microsoft have a 'hotfix' for it but says its fixed in sp2 which i have seems to be a USB 2.0 problem - which i was using at the time... just sods law ! there are no problems shown in device manager - its showing 2 cpu's any other software i should use for x2 core cpu's ? pc is def quicker but no way to tell or anything else to do apart from that, will def un install the optimizer tonight

There was a known issue iirc for nForce chipsets for USB. SP1 had to installed before the chipset drivers. Not sure if that's all changed now. What's your system?

As long as you have the AMD driver installed, the applications will look after themsleves. As I said, the applications have to be coded to take advantage of the the dual core. Multi threaded applications may take time to develop, which is why the quad core isn't really worth going for unless your into folding or something. The software isn't that fast at catching up. More's the pitty.
