Hey,

At the mo, im running a opty 144 at 2.8ghz with 1gb of gskill ram.

Now i cant decide whether to upgrade my cpu to a dual core (will be a 3800x2, then i'd clock it) or to upgrade to 2gb and keep my cpu. Now I want the one that will offer me the best performance increase, ovbiously i cannot do the both - otherwise i wouldnt have asked :p

Thanks,

G

Of the two, I'd say the CPU...

however I wouldn't bother investing in a new CPU right now; can you try and push the Opty further in the OC'ing department?

Personally I'd hang on for new technology then upgrade mobo ram and CPU in a few months.

what do you do with your pc ? Iv still got my single core A64 at 2800mhz, it flys, iv seen mates PC's with dual core, makes buga all difference really, unless you constantly use photoshop and 3dmax, i just use my pc for normal stuff and games, stay with what you have and get 2gb ram

Thanks for the replies guys. :)

I go on the occasional photoshop, but it is mainly games.

Looks like ram will be the best upgrade for me then :)

Can anyone tell me how much of a performance boost an additonal gb of ram actually is?? My bf2 loading times are fairly quick, what other areas will it improve - start up etc??

thanks once again,

G

2 Gig of mem.
I ran mt 3700SD at stock (2.2) and clocked (2.7) and then with 1 gig and 2 gig and in games the extra CPU speed made very little noticable difference but the extra RAM made such a difference in games like RTW, FEAR, Q4, ILS PF, LOMAC.
It also enabled me too effortlessly CTRL ALT DEL out of games without fear of delay or lock ups.
2 Gig with todays games all the way.

It would be the ram for me, especially if your main use is gaming.

Now isnt a good time to upgrade a CPU anyway, but I dont think its the best option for you anyway.

Im sure your overclocked opty handles things pretty nicely anyway. :p

BF2 benefits massively from 2 gig of ram - I expect you'll see even better loading times and possibly be able to bump up the graphics some too. I've heard endless rave reviews of how useful 2 gig is in that game, so there must be some truth in it somewhere. ;)

Why are you even considering a dual core cpu? Your chip is VERY fast and in some cases faster than the FX60!

Get 2gb ram and max out those texture settings in games. ;)
