I built my dual core system 3 years ago, and at the time I had to apply an AMD Dual Core Patch.

I am about to build a new dual core system, is this still the case?

Will be running xp media centre sp3.

Thanks.

Cant say I've ever heard of the dual core patch so Im guessing its not needed.

Why XP over Vista?

You shouldn't need any kind of patch nowadays... Dont think XP is fully multithreading now, but its better for dual core than it used to be.

ok thanks :D

As for XP over Vista, not my rig so not my choice. He does a lot of gaming and modding Half-life 1 etc and those programs do not function correctly if at all in Vista.

What CPU is in your new system?

If you are using an AMD CPU on XP have a gander at this

AMD Dual-Core Optimizer Version 1.1.4
AMD Dual-Core Optimizer Version 1.1.4 - The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized.

AMD Processor Driver Version
AMD Processor Driver Version 1.3.2.0053 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (x86 and x64) - Allows the system to automatically adjust the CPU speed, voltage and power combination to match the instantaneous user performance need. This package is a user friendly localized software installation of the driver designed for end-users. This driver supports AMD processors on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86 and x64 Editions.

Yep, thats right. You should install the patch, it fixes a few problems with XP not using both cores correctly.

The driver is also useful as it will let you use 'Cool n' quiet' (power saving thing).
