Dual core question

I use Trillian for my instant messenging but when it goes offline or loads up, it takes 100% CPU.

If I got a dual core processor, would this mean it only takes up 100% of one of these processors and therefore, it would be 100% on CPU core 1 and 0% on CPU core 2, so I could continue working without interruption?

Also, is there a task manager that can show both CPU percentages?

Thanks,

Jon

If you had a dual core processor the one instance of trillian would probably use 25% of each core giving 50% free of the systems processing time spare as windows itself can use both cores if the afinity is set to both cores that is, but if you manually set trillian to use a particular core then it will use just this core and that core would be at 100% (50% indicated in task manager) and the second core would be at 0% CPU usuage.

Task manager, on a dual core system shows two graphs of CPU time.

Yeah, from within the task manager you can set the afinity of each core to whichever processes you want.

Oh wow, so are you saying that I can choose what programs use what cpu?
Yes but it is highly recommended that you do not do this. It affects overall system performance. Only do it for compatibility purposes - e.g. with a game that misbehaves on a SMP system.
