just about to place an order in the morning but carnt decide on what cpu.

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM (CP-135-IN)

or

Intel Pentium 4 945 Dual Core "LGA775 Presler" 3.4GHz (800FSB) - Retail (CP-132-IN)

both around same price. what would be the better all round cpu for say-

HD recording / dvd converting / and gaming ( bf2/cod2/wow) also use a lot of photo shop type programs,

at the moment im running a AM2 3800+ single core its great for games but it takes way to long encoding its slower then my old hyper threading p4 3 gig

im gonna give the old pc to the wife as hers is well old now :D

ive been looking at the 945 Dual Core because it has the 4 mb cache.

what you lot think :)

thanks gavindo

I say Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM (CP-135-IN) and overclock it.

Agreed!

Got a 6600 Conroe (2.6GHz) up to 3.5GHz on a £15 Arctic Freezer 7 Pro this week with only a tiny voltage increase.

Imagine what it would do with water cooling/ Vapochill!!!??!!?

The 6600 is only 2.4 clock well so it says on your site, the 6700 is 2.67, but yeah to the op get a conroe fantastic chips have my 6300 sitting happy at 2.8 now.

oops, my bad - u r right 2.4GHz but it clocked to 3.5 without breaking a sweat - it was on an Abit Aw9D with Corsair XMS2 Pro 6400 RAM and an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro, 2 X WD Raptor 150Gb, Enermax Liberty 620W PSU and an X-Fi Soundcard in an Akasa 62 case.

My FX 57 is slow by comparison but I can't really justify an upgrade at the moment for three reasons:

1) My missus will remove all vital body parts essential for starting a family.

2) I get around 100fps in F.E.A.R with everything maxed out and 168fps in CS Source with everyting maxed out.

3) It looks like this:

The Corsair XMS2 Pro 6400 RAM looks like a great choice, anyone know how it compares with the Geil 6400 Ram? Which is better??

I was looking at that for a while, ive been told better to get the e6300, and then just over clock it to the same speed as the 6400(saves £30ish). I was looking at the corsair xms2 6400 cas 4 kit, guna go with that. Was looking at the g.skill equivelent but a lot of problems caused with it.
decided to splash out on the e6600 conroe :) will be upgrading in a few weeks.

right back home now long day at work.

i ended up ordering :

OCZ ModStream 520w ATX2.2 Power Supply (CA-017-OC)

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Connect3D ATI Radeon X1900 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-

ntel Core 2 DUO E6400 "LGA775 Allendale" 2.13GHz (1066FSB) -

Sony DWG120A 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) -

CoolerMaster Ammo 533 Aluminum (No PSU) - Silver (CA-089-CM)

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel

x 2 - Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 NCQ 200GB 6V200E0 SATA-II 8MB

:D just got to wait for it to come now

Thats all fine but make sure you update to the F5 BIOS for your board:

More stable

Better overclocking.

You also need to press CTRL + F1 to open up the advanced BIOS overclcoking options (Memory Timing etc) - It doesn't tell u this in the manual. lol
