Hi, just a quickie:

Does anyone know, or is currently using, an external HDD with multiple inputs connected to multiple PCs??

I want to connect my PC and my PS3 at the same time to something like this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-116-SE&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=801

I'm just curious if that's possible? (For the HDD to have to things connected and work with both at the same time)

Or preferably if anyone knows of a HDD with dual USB inputs??

Thanks

How about a NAS? Any device on your LAN can then access it.
afaik you can't connect multiple PC's into one USB/Firewire enclosure

er.. just read the info on that link i posted... I don't want all that back up stuff it's talking about. I meant to just link an external HDD with multiple inputs.

But anyway, whats a 'NAS'?

Can a PS3 connect to it?

Does anyone fancy connecting multiple things into their EHDD to see what happens?? haha :D

A NAS is a hard drive which connects into your LAN switch. Any computer that is also connected to LAN can then access files that's on the NAS.

Dunno about console though.

Interesting. Got any links to a NAS HDD? or is it just a standard drive thats plugged into a router? or am I missing something here...

See sig (DNS-323) although that's quite expensive, £165 just for enclosure alone, need to add SATA hard drives. But it's dual bay. I have two 320GB fitted.

Buffalo Linkstation Pro 500GB is around £200, if you factor in 500GB is £70, paying £130 for the enclosure.

hmm... just read the manual for the 'LaCie d2 Extreme 250GB Triple Interface External Hard Drive'

99% sure you can't connect mutliple things to it at the same time. Shame as that would have been ideal.

Oh well, I'm going to try connecting my PC to my projector and just using the PC to play my media rather than the method I was going to use of PC to PS3 to projector.
If that doesn't work out, I'll just get a standard USB2 EHDD and move it the 5ft from one machine to the other. haha ;)

Thanks for the replies.

What about buying two lengths of USB cable, instead of moving HD to one place to the other (power and unit itself) just unplug USB 1 and fit USB 2 (enclosure side)

yep lacie nas box from ocuk , ive got the 1tb big disc it works well and my sonus loves it...

Stay away from the ICY BOX NAS solutions they are crap, unreliable and have **** poor transfer rates...

I don't think a PS3 can see a NAS drive unfortunatly - but I could be wrong.

If I plug my NAS drive (which also has USB2 and eSATA) into another device, while also connected to the 1st device I plugged in, only the first connection actually works - and sometimes say I plug it in via Ethernet first, then connect it to USB, it will showup on both but the disc will be missing until I disconnect both and restart.

Yeah, the NAS system sounds pretty good. It's just a shame I only have one PC so for my particular case I can't see the value in it.

I would have used my iRiver as a bridge between PC and PS3 but the PS3 cant see that annoyingly.
An external USB HDD that I can use to back up my photos/music etc from the PC and that I can connect to the PS3 to play movie files etc will be fine.

well well well... sony just saved me some mullah...

The latest PS3 firmware update allows the PS3 to stream media from my pc, much like the 360 does. So yeah, no need for that HDD now :)

(Although, I probably will still get a drive to back up important files, but no need to worry about connecting it to the PS3 anymore.)
