I have both xp and vista 64 installed. however I would finally like to delete the xp and I assume this means deleting the relevant partition. Problem is I don't know where the partition is so am a bit worried about delting the wrong one. It may well be that I don't know what it is I am talking about here so any constructive advice would be greatlry received. Thank you. :)

I would assume that each partition holding your OS installations would have a drive letter assigned to them which you could check by going via

Start > Computer

then boot to Vista and delete the partition containing XP via Disk management. A lousy way of doing it though and more than likely cause problems the next time you tried to boot.

Would be far better to do a clean install of Vista to your HDD with a format before you start. Don't forget to save all your important docs etc first to a external drive or other media and make sure you have all the software that you currently have in your Vista install and want to use again. Searching the internet for the latest Vista drivers and DL those as well and save them before re installing saves lots of time.

When I install a new piece of hardware and then update to the latest available drivers I always save a copy off so if I re install it saves me time not having to bugger about trying to find them again.

If the windows XP was installed first, as it often is, the windows vista boot files may be on the XP partition.

You need EasyBCD or similar to sort out the boot, default boot partition and then in bios to check the first hard disk (if more than one disk).

Do not delete any partition until you are sure you are booting from the vista64 partition. You can check by electrically disconnecting the XP if they are on different drives.

I need to do the same thing too so thanks nkata for this info.

Finally I can ditch XP as the wife's work has upgraded it's VPN software \o/
