need some help getting my dual monitor set up going!

I have recently bought a new dell with a ATI x1300 graphics card. The dell has its own onboard graphics card too (which is disabled).

Its a slimline pc so the ATI card which fits only has one DVI output. There is a S video output but the picture is very poor using that (but i did get this working ok)

I want to run two monitors and thought the solution would be to get a DVI splitter however that doesn't seem to work at all - i just end up with two blank screens as soon as i plug the splitter in. I have read that the card is able to do this but i can't find the link again.

So, my questions are - can i use the onboard card as well as the ATI card? If i plug any monitor into the VGA output on the onboard card it comes up (as the pc is booting up) saying that i have the monitor pluged into the wrong slot and the boot sequence stops. I have tried disabling this in the BIOS but it doesn't help - it still defualts to the ATI card. How can i turn it off? And will it even work?

Is using the onboard graphics the best solution & why isn't the DVI splitter working?

Any help on how to go forward from here would be great!
