Im currently running a macbook pro with a 128GB Vertex 2 (sata 2) for system and an HDD for everything else.

I recently got a Samsung 830 256GB (sata 3) drive and am confused regarding how to set it up.

I usually use a smaller drive for my system and larger for everything, also usually faster for system, slower for stuff.

Now I'm in the situation where the larger drive is faster and the smaller drive is impractical for storage (cuz its small), and I don't want to spread my files out over two disks...

opinions?

I do a lot of photo/audio/video work so maybe it would be more of a benefit to run the fast drive as main storage?

non will be faster if you only have sata2 ports on the motherboard,it will just run at sata2 speeds 250-270mb per sec, choose whatever drive suits you best for the os

I have the same set of drives in my Probook 4330s.

I have the 256gb Samsung 830 installed as the OS drive and I have the 120gb Vertex 2 installed into the optical drive slot as a random files dump.

if it supports sata3 then id use the faster samsung drive as the os drive, and use the other for storage

You will only notice the speed difference between the two drives if you run benchmarks. Within normal use they will "feel" the same.

The 830's big advantage is large sequential writes where it can make use of SATA3. If you are not going to be copying 10GB files backwards and forwards all of the time, it doesn't really matter. For an OS drive, access time is key and both of these drives are close there.

Use the 2E of OS, amd 830 for large file / games storage. Either way, only benchmarks will show a difference.

After moving from and old Intel X25-M (250MB's read / 90MB's write) to RAID'd Sandisk Extremes (1000MB's read / 1000MB write), I notice no real-world difference. Benchmarks indicate that my old drive should get slaughtered, but that simply doesn't happen in the real world.
