Going on holiday to Dubai in May/June and looking for a Hotel. We want to stay near the beach and so looking at the Marina or Jumeirah Beach itself. From doing some research I see there lots of construction going on near the Marina and so I've been put off from the Sofitel Hotel.

It's going to be a chill out holiday, less of the touristy stuff more relaxing on the beach, nice meals etc....

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Oh and my budget is around £700 for 6 nights, or there abouts. The Sofitel was perfect for budget and location until I read about the construction :(

We just got back and stayed at Le Royal Meridien for 3 nights. Beach front, end of the Jumeirah row (nearest the west-side of The Palm) and at the end of the Jumeriah Walk which is a lively mile-or-so row of cafes, restaurants and shops. Private beach plus two outdoor swimming pools and the whole hog.

There's an empty plot to the west but nothing going on there. We originally were overlooking it partially after booking a sea view room and asked to be moved and we did so we were only overlooking the beach, hotel gardens and palm.

Not sure if it'll be within your budget mind, will vary on your dates, but it's 5* so well worth the extra. I was impressed anyway :).

Jumeirah beach hotel was very nice, set on a lovely beach, too many kids for my liking but good other than that

was a while ago so no idea of price these days

Yeah thought it might be, we were only there for 3 nights so splashed out a bit. There's loads along that stretch though so check out some of the others in the area too.

My parents live in the tower opposite there, so we use its resturants and bars a lot, it's got great atmosphere. To be honest, there is construction going on all around Dubai, it really doesn't make that much difference if you've got double glazing. Sometimes I even sit and watch the workmen and their lack of H&S, rather interesting (although not for them, I appreciate the lack is disturbing.)

Meridian totally gets my vote.

There's loads of lovely 5 star hotels on the Jumeirah Beach but I'm not sure if £700 will cut it. Is the construction a real problem? I've stayed in a few of the hotels and there was always mention of 'heavy construction' in the area but it never really was a problem. Maybe out of the beach area it would be I don't know.

Some of the hotels I would highly recommend.

Jumeirah Beach Hotel
Al Qasr
Dar Al Masyaf
Mina A' Salam

Look for deals during June - you can sometimes get half-board thrown in. Although you get the best deals during August and September (Ramadan) where they throw everything at you. I've been twice during Ramadan and it was never an issue and exceptional value.

I'll be fasting in Ramadan too! :)

Those hotels are amazing but way out of my budget. People on Tripadvisor are saying the construction around Sofitel isn't that bad, I'mnot sure I want to risk it. The location is ideal for us. Theres the Moevenpick Hotel Ibn Battuta Gate on my list too, they have a complimentary shuttle service to the palm islands were they have their own private beach for guests.

Does the Sofitel have a beach on Jumeirah? If not why that hotel and what are you looking for?

A friend recommended it and from looking at the pics and reviews it's what I'm looking for i.e. close to the beach, Emirate Mall and Marina Walk. It has wonderful views! It's also well within budget means we have more spending money. Check out the bookings.com link:

Yeah does look good. That whole area in front of it (where it says Marina Beach) is a low-rise/open area of shops, cafes and restaurants that was just being finished up when we were there.

The speed they work at over there is crazy - on our first day the whole area was cordoned off and they were still building the pavement, on the last it was all open and half the places were open and serving customers (with workmen still installing lights...). I would have thought that'll all be finished when you're there.

Genuine question : what's the appeal of a holiday in Dubai?

What's the appeal of holidaying anywhere? Everywhere has something to offer someone.

Dubai has great beaches, guaranteed nice weather, friendly locals, interesting culture, amazing buildings (incl. world's tallest), great shopping, 5* dining and customer service, experience of a life of luxury, great for kids, etc.

Thanks for the advice mate :)

Seen another one that a bit cheaper too

I wouldn't advise going during Ramadan - LOTS of things are closed and it's very hot, hence the low prices.

Le Meridian is nice - I was in Dubai for 4 months last year and saw loads of hotels. This is the one Bieber stayed at during his tour. There is also 'Barasti's' next door which is the only public beach you can get alcohol on and there is definitely a good party vibe there! Although the security staff call it "Bar Nasty" ;) There is a little bit of trouble there sometimes, but nothing on the scale of a UK club - raised voices, a bit of pushing and shoving; handbags really!!

What about a IHG hotel? Crowne Plaza etc. You can get a good deal from this link:

http://www.ihg.com/hotels/us/en/glo...R83jjEc7Xyjpgp%2F2O4AwPw5EYRDFh7lNeyUZf2r4%3D - Let me know if you use it and I can give you the names of some IHG staff you can use to complete the form.

Also, book the Burj Khalifa online and you can save a lot of money. Evening: Go to TGI's and out onto the balcony and you can see the Burj Khalifa fountain shows with a really good view (every half hour or hour).

Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates were my favourites.

Wild Wadi water park was awesome! Expensive, but if you are airline crew or military you can get a substantial discount. But even without, still worth a trip.

Get to Al Karama for your 'genuine fakes' and when they offer to take you to their 'proper shop' go and have a look (don't go alone, but these are well worth a look!)

See if you can get one of these too:

Or have a chat with Ronski and see if he can put you up in one of his servant quarters ;)

I go a lot for work and I used to really loathe the place but it has grown on me. It has a lot of genuinely excellent food and bars. I am taking my family over Easter because I need to be there and they will enjoy the waterparks I would hope.

It's a very odd place but it is finding its way a little. It is tacky in abundance.
